Hemostasis and Coagulation Hemostasis Hemostasis is the maintenance of circulating blood in the liquid state and retention of blood in the vascular system by preventing blood loss. Components - thrombocytes(platelets)-thrombin -fibrin- Ca+ - clotting factors (VIII,IX,X,XI,XII) - other cells (RBC’s and WBC’s)

Hemostasis Hemostasis is the process by which the body stops the leakage of blood from the vascular system after an injury. It includes the process that leads to clot formation as well as clot dissolution. If an injury occurs to a blood vessel, the hemostatic process is set in motion to repair the injury.

Hemostatic process Also called coagulation, proceeds in four steps - MEMORIZE. Vasoconstriction Platelet plug formation Fibrin clot formation Fibrinolysis

Coagulation Tests Clotting disorders can cause a dangerous amount of bleeding or clotting. If your doctor suspects you have a clotting disorder, they may recommend one or more coagulation tests. These tests measure various proteins and how they function. 1.Complete Blood Count- (Platelet Count) 2.Factor V Assay 3.Fibrinogen Level 4.ProThrombin Time (PT) and Activated Thromboplastin Time (PTT) 5.Thrombin Time 6.Bleeding Time

Conditions that can cause coagulation problems include: liver disease thrombophilia, which is excessive clotting hemophilia, which is an inability to clot normally

Clotting Disorders Look up and define the following bleeding disorders. 1.Hemophilia 2.Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) 3.Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) 4.Factor Deficiencies 5.Von Willebrand’s Disease
