3 Elizabethan Timeline -1564, April 23- William Shakespeare was born -1576- James Burbage builds ‘The Theatre’ -1593- Theatres close due to Bubonic Plague -1594- The Lord Chamberlains Company formed -1595- 1 st Doc. connecting Shakespeare to theatre -1596 to 1597- London authorities banned the public presentation of plays within the city limits of London -1596- James Burbage purchases Blackfriars for theatre use but does not get permission from Puritans -1598- Timber from ‘The Theatre’ is taken to build the Globe

4 Elizabethan Timeline -1599- The Globe Theatre opens on Bankside -1603- The Bubonic Plague kills 33,000 and all theatres close -1613, June 29- Fire at the Globe Theatre -1614- Globe theatre rebuilt with tiled roof -1616, April 25- Burial of William Shakespeare -1642- The English Civil War between (Parliamentarians) Puritans and the Royalists -1642- Puritans suppress all stage plays -1644- Puritans demolish the Globe Theatre -1648- Puritans order all playhouses to be pulled down, all players to be whipped, and anyone caught attending a play fined five shillings.

5 Elizabethan Timeline -1649- Civil war leads to execution of King Charles I by the Puritans -1653- Oliver Cromwell becomes Lord Protector of England -1658- Oliver Cromwell dies and Puritan power starts to decline -1660- King Charles II is restored to the throne of England -1660- The Restoration sees the opening of theatres again

6 FOUR playhouses during the Elizabethan era were literally Shakespeare’s. (He was co-owner.) ‘The Theatre’ in Shoreditch The Blackfriars of 1596 The Globe of 1599 The Globe of 1614. Smaller playhouses around London: Newington Butts, the Curtain, the Rose Theatre, the Swan Theatre, the Fortune, the Boars Head, the Bear Garden, the Bull Ring and the Hope.

8 Shoreditch- a.k.a ‘The Theatre’ Built out of: timber, tile, brick, iron, and lead. Theatre was large and solid, but needed repairs often that were extensive. The building was built so that it could be taken down and carried away.

9 Blackfriars theatre- Little information is known about the private indoor theaters that existed among the public ones. Ticket prices were excessively higher and patrons often bickered about who had better seats. There were often claims about disturbing the peace.

14 The large scale theatres like the Amphitheatre's were constructed using the Greeks and Romans building structure. They were set outside and circular like a coliseum. The Amphitheatre’s were also used for other forms of leisure and entertainment, gaming and gambling, fencing, tournaments, sports, and bear or bull baiting.** **These are the reasons the Puritans disagreed with the theatres.
