Cellular Respiration (cell breathing) The release of energy from the chemical bonds found in food The release of energy from the chemical bonds found in food Works best when oxygen is present Energy is packaged in ATP

ATP vs. ADP ATP- adenosine triphosphate High energy bond is broken and a lot of energy is released ADP- adenosine diphosphate No high energy bond ATP +H 2 O ADP + P + Energy

Two Types Of Respiration 1. Aerobic Most common Uses oxygen and Glucose to make ATP (energy) Also produces CO 2 & H 2 O

2. Anaerobic Does NOT use oxygen Uses glucose and produces: a. lactic acid in animals b. alcohol and CO 2 in yeast and bacteria http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/09/08/sweden.drunken.moose/

Glycolysis (split glucose) 1 st step of aerobic and anaerobic Takes place in cytoplasm PGAL  Pyruvic Acid + 2 ATP C 6 H 12 O 6 + 2 ATP PGAL  Pyruvic Acid + 2 ATP Need 2 ATP to break down glucose= 4 ATP made (Net gain =2)

Once Glycolysis happens…. 1. Aerobic Respiration Uses O 2 Uses O 2 Takes place in mitochondria Takes place in mitochondria Starts with Pyruvic acid Starts with Pyruvic acid Makes 34 ATP, CO 2, and water Makes 34 ATP, CO 2, and water Reaction in Animals Pyruvic acid + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O + 34 ATP

2. Anaerobic respiration- no oxygen available Yeast Also called alcohol fermentation Makes alcohol and CO Animals Also called lactic acid fermentation Makes lactic acid and CO (OUCH)
