3. Facilities Management Facilities Management is defined as: "A profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology." International Facility Management Association

Professional Association The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) is the largest and most widely recognized professional association for facility management, supporting more than 19,000 members in 78 countries. The Association's members are represented in 123 chapters and 16 councils

8. Certification and Licensing IFMA certifies facility managers through the Certified Facility Manager (CFM) credential. The CFM Exam is competency-based, testing what a person can do compared to standards that define the practice of facility management. One cannot take a course or a simple knowledge-based exam to earn the credential. IFMA’s competency-based program is at a higher level than a knowledge-based program, reflecting the growing importance of facility management in the international business world.

10. Training and Study The general higher education and training that takes place in a university, college usually includes significant theoretical and abstract elements, as well as applied aspects. In addition, professional-level education is always included within higher education

11. Role of Higher Education IFMA has developed standards to recognize quality facility management first-professional degree programs at colleges and universities. The accredited program initiative was designed to recognize and encourage the strengthening of current, valid facility management education degrees and to assist in the development of new facility management degree programs. http://foundation.ifma.org/

Role of Higher Education The benefits of attending an IFMA accredited program include:  Courses and seminars are approved for certification maintenance points for Certified Facility Managers.  Recognized program graduates are eligible to sit for the CFM exam one year sooner than graduates of non-recognized programs.

13. Why is this important? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: 10-year growth rate is 12% or 3,420 new Facility Management professionals annually Today IFMA accredited FM programs enroll: ~800 students total !!!!

14. IFMA Requirements  Standards for IFMA Accreditation encompass eleven core competencies and outcome based assessment expectations.  The standard describes both scholarly and real- world facility management applications and practices and provides a comprehensive model for an ideal facility management program.

15. Areas of Knowledge 1.Leadership and Strategy  Entry level facility managers understand the fundamentals and differences of leadership and management, and can recognize ethical conflicts in the discharge of their duties.

Areas of Knowledge 2.Operation and Maintenance  Entry level facility managers possess a working knowledge of building systems, structure, interiors, exterior and grounds, and understand their role managing the operation of the facility, its acquisition, installation, operations, maintenance, renovation, outsourcing and disposition, in an efficient, reliable, safe and secure manner in accordance with applicable regulations, standards and bylaws.

Areas of Knowledge 3.Project Management  Entry level facility managers understand the nature of a project, what constitutes the limiting parameters (scope), how it is structured, organized and executed, and how to apply the constraints of time, cost, quality and risk assessment to the project delivery process.

Degree in Technology, Facilities Management concentration an on-line program designed for the working student.
