2 The New National Curriculum The NC is just one element in the education of every child. Our school aims remain the same with a broad and balanced curriculum at its heart, but the new curriculum is very much more challenging than anything that has gone before it.

3 The bar has been raised significantly. The expectations, and therefore the tests, have become far more challenging.

4 Main changes to Y6 tests: No levels More challenging Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Test More challenging Reading Test 3 papers for maths and no mental maths – this has been replaced by an arithmetic test More challenging content for maths.

5 The tests:

6 Raw score – how many answers they got correct Scaled score – using the raw score in a conversion table to reach a scaled score. The national expectation will be ‘100’ The expected level will be equivalent to a 4a/5c in the old levels Results will be reported as ‘met’ or ‘not met’ Attendance. New reporting system at the end of the Key Stages (Years 2 & 6):

18 Assessment Day to day assessment is still very important It consists of teachers talking to the children, questioning and tracking their knowledge and understanding on a daily basis Marking work and giving feedback The new curriculum sets out the end of year expectations for each year group in Reading, Writing and Mathematics; Key Progress Indicators (‘I Can...’s).
