2 Anotace: Anotace Didaktický učební materiál je určen pro žáky 4. ročníku maturitního SOŠ. Je zaměřen na hlavní rozdíly mezi jednotlivými typy anglického jazyka a především na srovnání britské a americké podoby angličtiny. Materiál slouží ke shrnutí, opakování a procvičení látky, je určen pro použití na interaktivní tabuli, kde žáci doplňují výrazy. Metodický pokyn Materiál je určen pro práci s celou třídou, vyřešené úkoly jsou kontrolovány pomocí interaktivní tabile.

3 The English Language ENGLISH is the most important language for the communication in the world It is the global language English is spoken by over 300 million of people Today one in every five people worldwide speaks some English ENGLISH is the official language in 53 countries. The countries with the highest populations of native English speakers are: United States (215 million), United Kingdom (61 million), Canada (18.2 million), Australia (15.5 million), Nigeria (4 million), Ireland (3.8 million), South Africa (3.7 million), and New Zealand (3.6 million).

4 Standard English Standard English (S. E.) – is considered the “correct spelling”, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. It is also known as “Queen’s English” or “BBC English” There is not only S.E. spoken in the world, but there are many different varieties. Examples: Australian, American, Canadian, Indian, South African, West-African English

5 Dialects Varieties of language that differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar from each other and from Standard English are called Dialects. An example of a London dialect very hard to understand even for English native speaker is Cockney - originally the dialect of the working class of East End London Besides the accent, it includes a large number of slang words, including the famous rhyming slang. Examples of dialects: Scottish English, Irish English, Welsh English, American English (consists of many regional dialects – Boston, NY, Washington dialects), South African English.

6 Difficulties with understanding Sometimes people have difficulties to understand each other According to the way of speaking you can be easily recognized where you were born.

7 THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENGLISH is an Indo-European language. It is a Germanic language as German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and others. Not only English is spoken in the UK but also Irish, Scottish or Welsh. These languages belong to Celtic languages.

8 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARIETIES OF ENGLISH There are varieties between English spoken in the UK, the USA or Australia. There are differences in pronunciation, vocabulary and spelling. Example: An American walks on the sidewalk, an Englishman on the pavement. An English sheep farm is a sheep ranch in America and a station in Australia.

9 CANADIAN ENGLISH Canadian English the variety of English spoken in Canada English is the first language, or "mother tongue", of about 24 million Canadians within Quebec most residents are native speakers of Quebec French Canadian English contains words of British English and American English in its vocabulary, as well as many distinctive Canadian words

10 AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH Australian English a variety of the English language used in Australia it is Australia's official language and the first language of the majority of the population it was recognised as being different from British English by 1820. Australian English differs from other varieties of English in vocabulary, accent, pronunciation, grammar and spelling

11 AMERICAN ENGLISH American English English is the most common language in the United States about two-thirds of the world's native speakers of English live in the United States English is considered the official language of the United States The use of English in the United States is a result of English colonization

12 AMERICAN ENGLISH DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BRITISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH: DIFFERENT PRONUNCIATION OF SOME VOVELS: „O“, „R“, „A“ DIFFERENT PRONOUNCIATION IN SOME WORDS Spelling -OUR / -OR in AmE -RE / -ER in AmE -CE / -SE in AmE -ISE / -IZE in AmE -OGUE / -OG in AmE - LL / -L in AmE

14 DIFFERENCES IN GRAMMAR HAVE GOT – in BrE / Have you got – in AmE PAST TENSE used in AmE when talking about recent events Some irregular verbs with two past forms are used in a different way: LEARN – LEARNED (AmE) / LEARNT (BrE) Differences in using some prepositions

15 DIFFERENCES IN VOCABULARY There are about 1000 words that are different in British and American English. In both languages there is different terminoly used in these areas: Water / road / railway transport Car industry
