Waves and Energy

 Each correctly answered question is worth 1 point  If a group answers a question incorrectly, the next group can answer for double the points.  The points continue doubling until one group gets answers the question correctly!

 It is a hot summer day and you have soccer camp. What color shirt and short combo will you wear and why?

 Avoid wearing dark color clothes because it will make you hotter! The reason is because dark colored objects absorb more heat than lighter colored objects!

 The sun produces a lot of energy, but the earth only takes a little bit. It’s like comparing the ALL of food made by a cafeteria to the amount of food eaten by a single student.  Why does only a part of the sun’s energy come to earth?

 The sun radiates energy in ALL directions, not just towards planet Earth.

 Describe what a loud, high pitched sound may look like using the words “frequency” and “amplitude”

 Loud = high amplitude  High pitched = high frequency

 Describe what a quiet, low pitched sound may look like. Use the words “frequency” and “amplitude” in your description!

 Quiet – small amplitude  Low pitch – low/small frequency

 Several students made straw saxophones for a science project. Look at the table for information: Which student produced the saxophone with the HIGHEST frequencies and how do you know? StudentStraw Length (cm) A15 cm B8 cm C8.5 cm D5.5 cm E7 cm

 The shortest straw will cause the highest frequencies, therefore student D would have the highest pitched saxophone!

 How are playing a violin, playing a drum, and throwing a rock into a lake all related?

 They all produce vibrations!

 Which of the following accurately shows the “wavelength” of a transverse wave?

BB

 A TV channel broadcasts at a certain frequency. If the broadcast frequency is increased, what happens to the speed and wavelength?

 The speed would remain the same while the wavelength decreased.

 True or False: Colors absorb light differently

 TRUE!  Darker colors absorb more light energy and at a faster rate!

A B C D E If string A begins to swing back and forth, which string would start to swing and why?

 String E would vibrate because string A and E share the same resonant frequency

 A red sound ball, when thrown, whistles as it zooms in the air. Which direction is the red sound ball moving in the image below?

 The sound ball is moving to the right! The compressions of the sound waves are on the right hand side!

Which person would hear a higher pitched sound as the red sound ball goes through the air?

 The man in the yellow mask would hear the higher pitch sound.

 What is the term for the transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves?

 Radiation!

 Which direction from the epicenter does an earthquake travel?

 Outward in ALL directions

 Sound waves are an example of a mechanical, longitudinal wave. That means sound waves must move as _______________ and ______________.

 Compressions and Rarefactions!

 Which waves, along the electromagnetic spectrum, would be best to use for medical procedures because of their HIGH frequency?

 X-Rays and Gamma Rays

 What is the term for the nuclear reaction that takes place in the core of the sun and changes H atoms into He atoms also producing great amounts energy in the form of heat and light?

 FUSION!

 A wave is said to have high amounts of energy passing through it. Without changing the frequency, what could you say about the amplitude?

 It is most likely higher.

 Through which medium does sound travel the fastest?

 Solid

 Why do you normally find soft seats, curtains, and padded walls in a movie theatre?

The sound is absorbed better, making the theatre quieter. Reducing echoes gives a nicer, pure sounds that the movie intended you to hear!
