Living vs. Non living Objective: Today Students will investigate the characteristics of life and what determines if something is a living or nonliving object. Essential Question: How do you determine if something is living?

Warm Up Activity In class.  Observe the “ creatures” swimming on the overhead. From your observations make a list of why you think these creatures are living organisms.  Why do you think the little objects are doing what they are doing?  Who thinks this material is alive?  Who thinks it none living?  What is your evidence to support your ideas?  Evidence List  1.  2.  3.

What are the characteristics of life The characteristics of life are: Living things have ability to grow and develop

Characteristics of Living Things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CL2hetqpfg Living things must consume energy ( food) to sustain life function. Living things must consume water to carry out body function http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=eDmZEyKlF0I

Characteristics of living things  Living things must be able to exchange gases ( breathe)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breathing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breathing read the passage for breathing to learn more.  Living things must be able to respond to stimulus: notice how the pupil of the eye will respond to the change of light.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDK84 mP5ZAw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDK84 mP5ZAw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDK84 mP5ZAw

Living things  Living things have the ability to reproduce to see how a sexual reproduction works visit the linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drc nTg7ZCoc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drc nTg7ZCochttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drc nTg7ZCoc

Living Things  Living things must be able to excrete waste: click the link to learn about kidney function  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jqlq4 FsXBA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jqlq4 FsXBA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jqlq4 FsXBA Living things must be made of cells http://www.cellsalive.com/

In class activity Sorting of Living and Non living cards You now will be given pictures of items, you will have to sort them in groups according to whether you think the item is living, non living or you are undecided.

Watch the film to learn more about the characteristics of life  The_Characteristics_of_Life.exe The_Characteristics_of_Life.exe

Now take a quiz to test your knowledge of living and non living items  http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/science/ sciber00/7th/classify/living/quiz/livingqu.h tm http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/science/ sciber00/7th/classify/living/quiz/livingqu.h tm http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/science/ sciber00/7th/classify/living/quiz/livingqu.h tm

Cornell Notes for Living vs. Non Living  What is an organism  Non living  Dormant  Living An Organism is any living thing, plant animal or other form of life that exhibits the characteristics of life Non living describes an object that has never lived* Dormant describes an organism that is in a resting or inactive state Living describes an organism that carries out all of the characteristics of life* Summary of your notes will go here when lesson is finished.

What is the difference between Dead and Dormant  Dead is when an organism no longer performs life functionshttp://www.youtube.com/watch? v=BBDz-nALvGo&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=BBDz-nALvGo&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch? v=BBDz-nALvGo&feature=related Dormant is when an organism is still living however does not show signs of life until the appropriate conditions occur. Read the article to understand more about this process. http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/171/3966/29

Once again here is a review of the characteristics of life  What are the Characteristics of Life?  The characteristics of life are grow, need food, exchange gases, respond stimuli, reproduce, need water, eliminate waste.

This is a vocabulary graphic organizer known as a Frayer model it is used so that students will be able to identify, compare, and analyze a specific vocabulary term. In this activity students will select one key vocabulary term and complete the graphic organizer

After Class Review ( ACR)  Before you are dismissed please write two things that went well with the class today.  Please write one thing that did not go well with class today.  Please write one thing you learned that you did not know before today.
