Music within RE

SMSC – The Circle of Life ▪Using ‘The Circle of Life’ from the Lion King, it would help to provoke feelings and emotions from children which are useful when discussing the life cycle, a sense of well-being and Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural differences. ▪For example, the Lion King is set in Africa, so using this music would help to promote a discussion looking at typical African music, and this could be compared to different cultures from around the world. This could lead on to the different religions which are in Africa looking at how they differ from one another.

Lesson Plan ▪The Lion King can be used throughout all of the Key Stages with different activities each time. ▪In KS2, I would ask the children to listen to the music twice, on the second time getting them to write down what emotions they feel when the music is played, do they think that was the aim? ▪Then break the music down into sections looking at the lyrics to see if the song has any under lying meanings. This will then link back to what the children first wrote down about their emotions to see if they were correct – these were the emotions the song is trying to portray. ▪Next would be looking at the religions within Africa, and how the music varies across the continent.

Sikh Devotional Song ▪This song is a devotional Sikh song, it can be used when asking the children to think about the music from each religion, and the purpose of the music. ▪Children should understand that in Sikhism music is used in ceremonies and a devotion song could be used at general services and weddings. ▪There are 5 Gods in Sikhism, and each one is worshiped.

Lesson Plan ▪After listening to the music and discussing when the music would be used, I would get the children to re-create the ceremony in which the music would be played. ▪For example, if it was a Sikh wedding then I would get the children to research weddings from the religion, and as a whole class plan the wedding and eventually conduct our own ceremony. ▪The music would be played, and the children could also choose other Sikh music to be played.
