13 B2: Changes in medicine, c1845–c1945 Source: Extract from a report by a British newspaper, October 1854, on the military hospital at Scutari during the Crimean War. There are not sufficient surgeons. Worse, there is not even linen to make bandages. The men are kept, in some cases for a week, without the hand of a medical man coming near their wounds. They are left to die in agony, though catching desperately at the surgeon whenever he makes his rounds. They are kept in overcrowded conditions, some having to lie on the floor due to the shortage of beds. (a) What does this Source tell us about the hospital at Scutari? (3) (b) Explain the key features of the work in medicine of either Pasteur or Koch. (7) (c) How far did the role of women in medicine change in the years 1845–1945?
