3 What do we mean by student finance? Financial support available to students progressing to higher education Student finance outline Supplemented by part-time job, bursaries, scholarships or maybe a parent/carer contribution Some funding is repayable but some isn’t Either from a) the Government (through Student Finance England) or b) their University

5 TUITION FEES & LOANS OVERVIEW Universities and colleges* can charge new full-time students up to £9,000 per year (£6,750 part-time) for tuition fees Eligible students won’t have to pay any tuition fees up front A Tuition Fee Loan is available to cover the fee charged by the university

12 Applying online to Student Finance England To get your money in time for the start of the 2016 to 2017 academic year you must apply by: 31 May 2016 Full-time and part-time students can apply online to Student Finance England. Set up a student finance online account. Log in and complete the online application form. If needed, include details of your household income. Parents will need to support the application. Usually, within 6 weeks you’ll get a loan declaration in the post - sign and return it. Government Financial Support

13 NHS covers the fees for many of their courses: Nursing (Adult, Child, Mental Health) Radiography Midwifery Medicine and Dentistry AFTER Year 4 NHS support for living costs paid direct to student: Living costs loan (NOT means-tested. 19 Government Loan Interest Interest is payable from day one Interest is charged at RPI + up to 3% BUT the amount of interest charged does not affect the size of your monthly repayments Government Financial Support

20 Repayment details Repayment direct from wages Repay 9% of income over £21,000 only (April after graduation) Example - £22,000 a year salary, you repay 9% of £1,000 so £90 a year (or £7.50 a month) Income drops below £21,000 a year then repayments automatically stop Student loan balances written off after 30 years Government loan repayment details

21 Key messages: No up-front tuition fees Annual loan repayments are lower BUT will repay for longer and may repay more overall Monthly loan repayments are the same whether the course costs £6,000 or £9,000 Student loans are different to other forms of borrowing Repayments are through the tax system and may be viewed as a sort of graduate tax/contribution Government Financial Support

22 Disabled Students’ Allowances provide help towards the additional costs that a student may face as result of their disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty: DSAs Support: Is available in addition to the standard student finance package, Does not have to be repaid, Is not affected by household income, Looks at the specific needs of the individual in relation to their circumstances and studies Students need to be aware the DSA application process can take up to 14 weeks! ADDITIONAL SUPPORT DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES

24 What DSAs can pay for You can get help with the costs of: specialist equipment, like computer software non-medical helpers, like a note-taker or reader extra travel costs you have to pay because of your disability other costs, like photocopying Government Financial Support

25 Your DSA ‘needs assessment’ Student Finance England will ask you to contact an assessment centre to work out what help you need. After the assessment, you’ll get a report listing equipment and other support you can get for your course. How DSAs are paid Money is paid directly to who provides the service or equipment or into your bank account Government Financial Support

26 Apply online at gov.uk/studentfinance as soon as possible to make sure student finance is in place for the start of their course Register on UCAS and we can let students know when it’s time to apply They do not need a confirmed place at university or college to apply Make a note of their account log-in details and keep them safe Agree to share information from their application, this helps apply for many bursaries and some scholarships Students will be assessed for non means tested support if there are any delays in receiving household income information APPLICATION INFORMATION KEY MESSAGES

27 APPLICATION INFORMATION COMPLETING AN APPLICATION Before starting an application, students should have the following to hand: Passport - SFE can check identity using valid UK passport details University and course details Bank account details and National Insurance number If parents or other sponsors will be supporting a students application, they will need their own account on GOV.UK and provide information including: National Insurance number(s) Household income information Details of other child dependants If sponsors can’t submit income details online, they should send a photocopy of evidence including: P60s, Pay slips or Tax returns

34 University of Leeds Non-Automatic Support (2015) Separate application required; not repayable and highly competitive HSBC Scholarship provides a tuition fee waiver £7000 plus £3,000 p.a. cash to successful applicants who meet the following criteria: From a household with an income of £42,600 or below Achieve at least AAB at A level Liable for the full £9,000 fees and not receiving a fee subsidy/waiver Not in receipt of any other scholarship or bursary DEADLINE: April 2015 University Financial Support

39 Eligibility Criteria – applicants meet at least 2 of the following: From a household with an annual income of up to £25,000 OR Received free school meals during your GCSE studies In first generation of your immediate family to apply to HE From a school achieving less than the national average of students achieving 5 A*- C GCSEs (including English & Maths or equivalent) Living in or have been brought up in public care Live in a geographical location with low progression to HE Only HE option is to study at a local university Studies have been disrupted by circumstances in their personal, social or domestic lives Access to Leeds Educational Engagement
