Math 8C Today we will: Write the equation of a line given a graph. Write the equation of a line given two points.

What do we need to know? In order to write the equation of a line in Slope-Intercept form…  We need SLOPE & the Y-INTERCEPT! U2D17

What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? Now put it all together! U2D17

What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? Now put it all together! U2D17

What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? Now put it all together! U2D17

What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? Now put it all together! U2D17

Try this one! What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? Now put it all together! U2D17

Must Do: (11/2) U2D13

Must Do: (11/3) 2. You are told that your cell phone plan is a linear relationship, where the cost depends on how many minutes you use. Based on your last statement, you talked for 105 minutes and it cost $57.75. The month before, you talked for 135 minutes and it cost $68.25. What are the variables? What are you given? Write an equation that represents this relationship. U2D13

What if we don’t have a graph to look at? U2D17 Point-Slope Formula

The Point-Slope Formula! U2D17

Example U2D17

Independent Practice U2D17 – ICP U2D17

Math 8C – U2D18 Today we will: Write the equation of a line given a graph. Write the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line.

Must Do: (11/4) U2D18

Parallel and Perpendicular lines If two lines are parallel, what can we say about their slopes? U2D18 If two lines are parallel, their slopes are the same.

Which of these lines are parallel? 1. 2. 3. U2D18 Parallel, because 2 is the same as 4/2 Not parallel, because 2/3 is not the same as -2/3 Parallel, because both lines have a slope of 1/3

Writing Equations of Parallel Lines Write the equation of the line parallel to the graph of and through the point (2, 3). 1.Find the slope (remember, parallel lines have the same slope) 2.Use the point-slope formula U2D18

You Try! Write the equation of a line parallel to the graph of the given line and through the given point. 1. 2. 3. U2D18

Must Do: (11/9)

What can we find out about the slopes of lines that are perpendicular? U2D18 m = 2/3 m = -3/2 m = 1/2 m = -2

Perpendicular Lines If two lines are perpendicular to one another, then their slopes will be negative reciprocals (the slopes are reciprocals and have opposite signs). Example: Write the slope of a line that would be perpendicular to the graphs of the given lines 1. 2. U2D18

Writing Equations of Perpendicular Lines Write the equation of the line perpendicular to the graph of and through the point (2, 3). 1.Find the slope (remember, slopes of perpendicular lines are reciprocals and have opposites signs) 2.Use the point-slope formula U2D18

You Try!! Write the equation of the line perpendicular to the graph of the given line and through the given point. 1. 2. 3. U2D18

Let’s put it all together:
