4 Getting to know you… What is your favorite book? A good book usually has a intro that pulls you in and makes the story come alive. My favorite book is: Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell in 1936 First Line: "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm as the Tarleton twins were."

5 The “Introduction” “The introduction and conclusion to a paper can be understood as a type of transition... At the beginning of a paper, the introduction serves as a transition by moving the reader from the world outside of your paper to the world within. At the end of the paper, the conclusion works in the opposite direction by moving readers from the world of your paper back to their own world...” ( Allyn and Bacon Handbook, 1999, p. 151 )

6 What is an Introduction and its Purpose? Simply, it is a paragraph (or two) that introduces your paper’s topic to your reader It should grab their attention and piques their interest so they will want to read the rest of your paper. There are two important things to note when writing your introduction: 1.establish the topic 2.make it interesting. Now we will look at these one at a time. All the sample introductions in this section were written by actual composition students here at Kaplan University.

7 Make it interesting! How? 1.Begin with a quotation: However, make sure to explain its relevance! A quotation with no explanation is not effective at all. 2.Begin with a definition: The key to using a definition is to make sure you are defining something that needs defining. Do not throw in a definition that everyone knows. 3.Begin with a question 4.Start with the opposite opinion 5.Begin with a narrative 6.Begin with an interesting fact or startling information 7.Begin with dialogue

8 Tips Don't be afraid to write a tentative introduction first and then change it later Pay special attention to your first sentence Be straightforward and confident

9 Avoid these kinds of Intros* 1.The place holder introduction. Example: Slavery was one of the greatest tragedies in American history. There were many different aspects of slavery. Each created different kinds of problems for enslaved people. 2. The restated question introduction Example: Indeed, education has long been considered a major force for American social change, righting the wrongs of our society. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass discusses the relationship between education and slavery in 19th century America, showing how white control of education reinforced slavery and how Douglass and other enslaved African Americans viewed education while they endured. Moreover, the book discusses the role that education played in the acquisition of freedom. Education was a major force for social change with regard to slavery.

10 Continued*… 3.The Webster's Dictionary introduction Example: Webster's dictionary defines slavery as "the state of being a slave," as "the practice of owning slaves," and as "a condition of hard work and subjection.” 4.The "dawn of man" introduction Example: Since the dawn of man, slavery has been a problem in human history. 5.The book report introduction. Example: Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, in the 1840s. It was published in 1986 by Penguin Books. 12 Putting it altogether… Conclusions Your conclusion is your chance to have the last word on the subject. The conclusion allows you to have the final say on the issues you have raised in your paper, to summarize your thoughts, to demonstrate the importance of your ideas, and to propel your reader to a new view of the subject. It is also your opportunity to make a good final impression and to end on a positive note. Your conclusion can go beyond the confines of the assignment. The conclusion pushes beyond the boundaries of the prompt and allows you to consider broader issues, make new connections, and elaborate on the significance of your findings. Your conclusion should make your readers glad they read your paper. Your conclusion gives your reader something to take away that will help them see things differently or appreciate your topic in personally relevant ways. It can suggest broader implications that will not only interest your reader, but also enrich your reader's life in some way. It is your gift to the reader.

13 Conclusion “tips” 1.Play the "So What" Game. If you're stuck and feel like your conclusion isn't saying anything new or interesting, ask a friend to read it with you. Whenever you make a statement from your conclusion, ask the friend to say, "So what?" or "Why should anybody care?" Then ponder that question and answer it.

14 Continued… 2. Return to the theme or themes in the introduction. This strategy brings the reader full circle. For example, if you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay is helpful in creating a new understanding. You may also refer to the introductory paragraph by using key words or parallel concepts and images that you also used in the introduction.

15 Continued… 3.Synthesize, don't summarize: Include a brief summary of the paper's main points, but don't simply repeat things that were in your paper. Instead, show your reader how the points you made and the support and examples you used fit together. Pull it all together. 4.Include a provocative insight or quotation from the research or reading you did for your paper.

16 Continued… 5.Point to broader implications. 6.Propose a course of action, a solution to an issue, or questions for further study. This can redirect your reader's thought process and help her to apply your info and ideas to her own life or to see the broader implications.

17 What not to do… The "That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It" Conclusion. This conclusion just restates the thesis and is usually painfully short. It does not push the ideas forward. People write this kind of conclusion when they can't think of anything else to say.

18 Continued… The "Sherlock Holmes" Conclusion. Sometimes writers will state the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion. You might be tempted to use this strategy if you don't want to give everything away too early in your paper. You may think it would be more dramatic to keep the reader in the dark until the end and then "wow" him with your main idea, as in a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The reader, however, does not expect a mystery, but an analytical discussion of your topic in an academic style, with the main argument (thesis) stated up front.

19 Continued… The "America the Beautiful"/"I Am Woman"/"We Shall Overcome" Conclusion. This kind of conclusion usually draws on emotion to make its appeal, but while this emotion and even sentimentality may be very heartfelt, it is usually out of character with the rest of an analytical paper. A more sophisticated commentary, rather than emotional praise, would be a more fitting tribute to the topic.

20 Continued… The "Grab Bag" Conclusion. This kind of conclusion includes extra information that the writer found or thought of but couldn't integrate into the main paper. You may find it hard to leave out details that you discovered after hours of research and thought, but adding random facts and bits of evidence at the end of an otherwise-well-organized essay can just create confusion.
