2 People To Remember Anne Hutchinson Squanto Roger Williams Mary Rowlandson The Puritans Jonathan Edwards John Winthrop Anne Bradstreet

3 Anne Hutchinson Smart, knew a lot about the bible and could help people understand what the preacher was saying. Banished for holding bible study in her home. She and her family were later killed by Indians.

4 Squanto Native American who spoke English. Helped colonists survive and communicate with the Native Americans

5 Roger Williams He believed church and state should be separate to avoid corruption. Banished for his beliefs.

6 Mary Rowlandson Her village was attacked by Indians at sunrise. She and several others were taken hostage and lived with the Indians for many months. She and one of her children were injured by the same bullet. 12 were killed and many more injured.

7 The Puritans Though they came here seeking religious tolerance, they were not very tolerant of others who did not believe as they did. They wanted to “purify” the Church of England. Believed only God can determine who will be saved. Believed unmarried men and women should not be alone together. Viewed the Indians as less than human.

8 Jonathan Edwards Very Famous preacher. Wrote thousands of sermons, but most famous is “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” Used his sermons to frighten his congregation into seeking salvation. Used lots of imagery in his sermons comparing God’s wrath to black clouds, glowing flames, great waters, a bow and arrow. Believed all were sinners and powerless before God.

9 Anne Bradstreet Wrote poems. Came from a wealthy family. One of her most famous poems is about her house burning after being struck by lightning. She believed that worldly possessions were not important and if God saw fit to take them away, then she would not complain, because her greater reward was in heaven.

10 John Winthrop First Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Thought Boston should be a utopia, “A city on a hill, a beacon of light”.

13 Why did Sarah come to meet with the magistrates in 1703? To clear her sisters’ names. At the end of the video, what does Sarah say is the real reason behind all this witch madness? bad blood from old land disputes, church politics, superstitions.
