Yield of Larch hybrids compared to pure Russian larch (Larix sukaczewii) in northern Sweden 51 years after establishment Lars Karlman and Owe Martinsson (Jilu Tema Skog Bispgården, Sweden)

Background Hybrid larch (Larix eurolepis) is successfully cultivated in southern Sweden but not hardy enough for northern Sweden. In the 1950´s larch hybrids intended for northern Sweden were developed. The Society of forest tree breeding, Fritz Bergman made several crossings with Larix sukaczewii as one of the parent trees. This presentation presents yield after 51 years

Results Russian provenances - Arkhangelsk originating at appr. 64°N - Sverdlovsk from Lat. 57°N

L. sukaczewii, provenance Arkhangelsk and Sverdlovsk, mean annual increment for 49-53 years at the six sites

Larch hybrids. Mean annual increment at site Sörånäset (63° 41´ alt. 200 m)

Dominant height of larch hybrids at site Sörånäset compared to L. sukaczewii, Scots pine and Norway spruce

The best growing hybrid at Sörånäset Ångermanland. L.dec x L.suk Total age51years Mean height 28.0 m Dominant height28.9 m Mean diam31.3 cm Standing volume956 m³ Mean annual increm.18.7 m³ Stems/ha960

Development of dominant height in L. sukaczewii in northern Sweden (Martinsson 1995) The red stars indicate the developement of the Russian larch hybrids at Sörånäset 56-1 56-3 56-4 56-2

L. sukaczewii in northern Sweden, total yield (Martinsson 1995) 56-1 56-4 56-2 56-3 Arch Sverd

51-year old hybrid between Russian (Larix sukaczewii) and Japanese larch (L. kaempferi) Height 31 m Diam. 54 cm.

Conclusions Arkhangelsk provenance had better yield after 50 years than Sverdlovsk provenance at five out of six sites in northern Sweden. A mean annual growth of 9-11 m3 /ha-year is possible for the first 50 years on fertile sites Russian larch hybrids have shown great potential for growth at two sites in northern Sweden. Results indicate a superiority over pure Russian larch. The best hybrid (L. dec x L. suk) had a dominant height that exceeded Norway spruce and Scots pine with 5-6.5 m after 50 years of growth
