WIPO’s work on E-waste An introduction to the Patent Landscape Reports Project and WIPO’s Cooperation with UNEP, BRS Secretariat COP 2013 Geneva 6 May 2013 Irene Kitsara Patent Information Section, Access to Information and Knowledge Division

Introduction to WIPO World Intellectual Property Organization – www.wipo.intwww.wipo.int Specialized UN Agency Dedicated to the use of intellectual property (IP: patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs..) for the promotion of creativity and innovation Based in Geneva, Switzerland www.wipo.int

Strategic Framework 2012-21 for the Implementation of the Basel Convention Strategic Goal 2: “..strengthen environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and other wastes” Objective 2.2: “…support and promote capacity- building for Parties, including technological capability, technology needs assessment and technology transfer, to reduce the generation and hazard potential of hazardous wastes and other wastes ”

Accessing technological information Traditional approach  scientific journals/publications Challenges: not systematic or optimized approach, access to and completeness of information Need for additional approach  patent-based data (patent information)  complementary/unique information

Patent Information and its added value Patent  Exclusive right to its owner for an invention for ~ 20 years Patent Information: Technical Legal data Business Complementary/unique information PATENTSCOPE (WIPO Patent Database: 30 mio patent documents)

Searching for waste management related patent documents International Patent Classification (IPC)  classification of patents & utility models according to technology area WIPO IPC Green Inventory IPC codes related to EST/Green Technologies Waste management Category

IPC Green Inventory – Waste management

Seeking and offering technologies: WIPO GREEN – The matchmaking platform Matchmaking platform to accelerate development & dissemination of green technologies to combat environmental challenges Seekers and providers of green technologies upload their needs and solutions Needs and solutions identified, partnerships facilitated, actors from around the world connected Waste-related technology already included in the platform www.wipo.int/green

WIPO Patent Landscape Report Project WIPO Development Agenda Project  Developing Tools for Access to Patent Information (launched in April 2010)  Patent Landscape Reports Support tool for policy and decision makers in areas of interest for developing countries (public health, food and agriculture, climate change/environment) Research and analysis of innovation and patenting activity in a specific technological field/geographical area using patent information Patent data-based analysis presented in a structured, non-expert friendly way, but including rich information for subject matter and patent information experts Search patent data Filter and find relevant information Group and analyze search results

WIPO’s Cooperation with the BRS Secretariat Basel Convention Projects: Mobile Phone Partnership Initiative Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment Patent Landscape Report on E-waste recycling and material recovery Developing and Refining the Terms of Reference Public Procurement  contract award Patent Search Methodology – Search results refinement Patent and Business Analysis Finalization and Publication of the report

WIPO’s Patent Landscape Reports Landscape Reports published on http://www.wipo.int/patentscope/en/programs /patent_landscapes/reports/ http://www.wipo.int/patentscope/en/programs /patent_landscapes/reports/ Full patent search documents available Interactive analysis tool Patent landscape reports on: Desalination technologies and the use of alternative energies for desalination Membrane filtration and UV Water treatment Wastewater treatment (planned)

Coming up: Key findings of the E-waste Recycling and Material Recovery Patent Landscape Reports Questions? Comments? Irene.Kitsara@wipo.int Thank you!
