1. Deaf History 1950s – 1980s ASL

2. William Hoy  Born in 1862, became Deaf from meningitis, when he was 2 or 3  He went to the Ohio School for the Deaf  He eventually got the nickname William “Dummy” Hoy  He became a Major League Baseball Player  In 1894 he was sold to the Cincinnati Reds.  When he retired from baseball he had played 1,795 games in a 15 year career  He hated lip-reading and loved signing  He died at 99 years old in 1961

3. Helen Keller  born in the south in 1880, she contracted an illness at 19 months of age that left her Deaf and blind  Ann Sullivan came to the Keller house in 1887 and taught Helen sign language  In 1904 at the age of 24 she graduated from Radcliffe college becoming the first Deaf blind person to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ch_H8pt 9M8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ch_H8pt 9M8  She died June 1, 1968

4. Curtis Pride  Born in 1968, Deaf at birth  He attended the college of William and Mary and was an excellent soccer player  He played with the Montreal Expos, Detriot Tigers, Red Sox, and saw a little action with the Yankees  Is currently the head baseball coach at Gallaudet

Princess Alice  Alice of Battenberg – she was born in 1885; her real name was Princess Victoria Alice Elizabeth Julie Marie, but everyone called her Princess Alice, and she was born Deaf.  She eventually married Prince Andrew of Greece.  In 1921 she had her 5 th baby: Prince Phillip  In 1947 Alice’s son Phillip married Princess Elizabeth, the woman who would become the Queen of England!  Alice died in 1969 at 84.

6. Linda Bove -She was born in Nov 1945 to Deaf parents -Performed for the National Theater of the Deaf (NTD) -In 1970 she married Ed Waterstreet, also Deaf -she made her debut on Sesame Street in 1971! -she brought sign language to every living room https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwM4 TUyFp2Y

7. Deanne Bray Bray was born in 1971 and has been deaf since birth. She is a proud member of the Deaf community and credits her parents with having an open mind about her deafness and getting her involved in the Deaf world. She is also bilingual with American Sign Language and both spoken and written English. She is best known for her role in the TV show Sue Thomas FBI!

8. LeRoy Columbo  Was born in 1905  An attack of meningitis left him deaf and almost paralyzed, but he learned how to swim; strengthening his legs.  He eventually became a famous Deaf lifeguard  In 1928 he rescued two people from a burning boat  He became known as the ‘hero of Galveston’ credited with rescuing 907 people  He died in 1974

9. Andrew Foster  He was born in 1925  He graduated with an 8 th grade education from the Alabama School for the Colored Deaf.  In 1951 he enrolled at Gallaudet University and finished in 3 years time.  He is most well-known for becoming a missionary in Africa, and bringing hope to Deaf Africans  He died in 1987

10. Marlee Matlin  Born on Aug. 24, 1965  She got German measles at 18 months and became Deaf  Her first role was in Children of a Lesser God, and she won an Academy Award for best actress in 1987  She was also in Dancing with the Stars  And currently plays Emmitt’s mom in Switched at Birth

12. Last facts... + In 1958 President Dwight Eisenhower signs PL 85-905 establishing Captioned films for the Deaf. + In 1965 the first ASL dictionary is printed + In 1985 Cochlear Implants are approved
