10 When the French Revolution began in 1789 the French Parliament had not met for 175 years!! The Parliament was arranged in a semi circle shape… … the King’s supporters sat on the Right… … the King’s opponents sat on the Left.

13 KEYWORDS NATIONALISM (R-WING) SOCIALISM (L-WING) COMMUNISM (VERY L-WING) – a belief that my country is special & a sense of duty to my King / traditional rulers a belief that the wealth of my country should be shared more equally across its people an extreme form of Socialism: all power should be taken from the upper classes and given to the lower classes

17 In Oct 1917 a Communist group, led by Lenin, seized power in Russia… It quickly took away the wealth of the middle & upper classes… The middle and upper classes were terrified of something similar happening in Germany…

18 THE KEY GROUPS IN GERMANY AFTER WW1 FRIEDRICH EBERT & THE SOCIALISTS THE COMMUNISTS THE NATIONALISTS & THE FREIKORPS

19 First President of the new Government Became unpopular after he signed the Treaty of Versailles Both the Nationalists and many on the Left opposed him Friedrich Ebert Why might these groups be angry with Ebert?

20 The Communists … also known as the Spartacists… … led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg … wanted all power to be given to the working / lower classes.

21 The Nationalists Led by Wolfgang Kapp …hated Ebert for signing the ToV… … thought Germany could still have won WW1… … wanted to bring back the Kaiser… Freikorps = groups of nationalist ex-soldiers… they still had their weapons and hated Communists and Socialists

24 EventWho was involved? What happened? How did it end? The Spartacist Rising 1919 LEFT The Kapp Putsch 1920 RIGHT EXTENSION: Design a Right Wing or Left Wing poster criticising the Weimar Government – include an image and a slogan.

The Spartacist Rising 1919 LEFT The Kapp Putsch 1920 RIGHT The Spartacist League – a Communist Group set up by Rosa Luxemburg & Karl Liebnecht Jan 1919 – they tried to take over Berlin – started attacking the new Government and army The Freikorps helped the army defeat the Spartacists… … leaders killed… … the uprising was crushed… Freikorps units and other Nationalists, led by Wolfgang Kapp 5,000 Freikorps take control of Berlin… … Ebert looked doomed… army refused to fire on Freikorps Berlin workers go on strike (refuse to cooperate with Kapp) – makes it impossible for Kapp to rule - after a few days Kapp flees…
