Building a Lemon Battery To begin to understand how batteries work, I can help to build simple chemical cells using readily available materials which can be used to make appliances work - SCN 2-10a

Today we are going to … Learn about some of the components of batteries Learn how batteries work And we will be able to… Build our own batteries out of simple materials to power a small bulb

30 Seconds! Chat to the person next to you about what you think a battery is… …Phew! You can now have another 30 seconds to talk about how does a battery work?

Batteries come in lots of different shapes and sizes. They convert chemical energy into electrical energy.

Batteries are made up of deferent components (parts) -Electrodes: These are materials that conduct electricity (let it flow through them easily) and let it enter/leave something. We need different electrodes in our battery. One must be positively charged, the other must be negatively charged. - Electrolyte: This is the liquid substance that will conduct electricity in the battery (acid).

Batteries consist of two different metals suspended in an acidic solution. Copper and Zinc work well as metals and the citric acid content of a lemon provides an acidic solution. Copper (+) Zinc (-) Hint – you can use a copper penny (+) and a nail (-) as alternatives!

You have created a single cell of a battery. The zinc nail and the copper penny are the electrodes. The lemon juice is the electrolyte. All batteries have a "+" and "-" terminal. Electric current is a flow electrons. Electrons will flow from the "-" electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the "+" electrode of a battery. Your conductor will be the LED light…joined to your cell by crocodile clips!

If you join the lemons together to form a larger circuit, you create a battery with enough power to operate an LED bulb! Get together with your friends, join the lemons together and see if you can get your bulb to light! Today we have… Learnt about the components that make up batteries and discovered how they work.
