1 Place Location- South and East Asia The following tutorial is designed to help you with locations of physical features and countries in South and East Asia based on 7 th grade social studies Georgia Performance Standards

Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: Ganges River, Huang He (Yellow River), Indus River, Mekong River, Yangtze (Chang Jiang) River, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, Sea of Japan, South China Sea, Yellow Sea, Gobi Desert, Taklimakan Desert, Himalayan Mountains, and Korean Peninsula. b. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Vietnam.

16 Talimakan Desert The Taklamakan Desert is a desert in Central Asia, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. It is bounded by Kunlun Mountains to the south, and Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan to the west and north. Talimakan image of the day Taklamakan is known as one of the largest sandy deserts in the world, ranking 15th in size in a ranking of the world's largest non- polar deserts. BACK

18 Gobi Desert The Gobi is the largest desert region in Asia. It covers parts of northern and northwestern China, and of southern Mongolia. This desert is the fifth largest in the world. 19 Bay of Bengal Part of the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal is located between India and the Malay Peninsula. Click on the map for more information BACK

20 Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean is located to the east of Africa, south of Asia, and west of Australia. It is the third largest of the world's five oceans. There are four critically important access waterways here. They are the Suez Canal, Bab el Mandeb, Strait of Hormuz, and Strait of Malacca. 21 Suez Canal The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway running north to south across the Isthmus of Suez in northeastern Egypt; it connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. The canal provides a shortcut for ships operating between both European and American ports and ports located in southern Asia, eastern Africa, and Oceania. BACK

22 Bab el Mandeb Bab el-Mandab is a strategic link between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. In 2006, an estimated 3.3 million barrels of oil passed through the strait per day. BACK

23 Strait of Hormuz Located between Oman and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Hormuz is the world's most important oil chokepoint due to its daily oil flow of 16.5-17 million barrels per day. Closure of this strait would have a heavy impact on the world’s oil supply. BACK

24 Strait of Malacca From an economic and strategic perspective the Strait of Malacca is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. The strait is the main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, linking major Asian economies such as India, China, Japan and South Korea. Over 50,000 vessels pass through the strait per year carrying about one-quarter of the world's traded goods. BACK

25 Sea of Japan The Sea of Japan is part of the Pacific Ocean and separates Japan from mainland China. Rich fishing grounds make it important to the economies of the region. Click Here BACK

26 South China Sea The South China Sea is part of the Pacific Ocean. China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines border the South China Sea. It is one of the largest sea bodies after the five oceans. Click on the map to find out more about the South China Sea BACK

27 Yellow Sea The Yellow Sea is the name given to the northern part of the East China Sea It is located between China and the Korean Peninsula. Its name comes from the sand particles that color its water, originating from the Yellow River. Click Here BACK

28 Ganges River One of the major rivers on the Indian Subcontinent, the Ganges is 1560 miles long and is considered a holy river by Hindus. Pollution is a major issue. 29 Huang He River (Yellow) The Yellow River flows east through China to the Yellow Sea. 30 Indus River The Indus River is one of the chief rivers of southern Asia. From its source in Tibet, China, the Indus flows some 1,900 miles through India and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. The Indus River Valley was home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations.Indus River Valley BACK

31 Mekong River The Mekong River forms much of the border between Laos and Thailand. It also flows through Cambodia and Vietnam before flowing into the South China Sea.Mekong River BACK
