“We need to regain a sense that our relationship with the earth is about communion not consumption” Rowan Williams

A letter from a Grandfather to his Granddaughter Written by Michael Morpurgo ‘I Wish For You’ Short Film

Genesis 1:26-31 (NIV) 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground - everything that has the breath of life in it - I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day.

Genesis 2:15 (NIV) The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Psalm 102:25 (NIV) In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

A Prayer based on Psalm 102:25 Loving God, thank you for the gift of creation. As we experience each day, as we take every step on our life’s pilgrimage, may we take time to wonder and give you thanks. From each sunrise to every sunset, in all the seasons and with every breath, may we celebrate our home in creation, and the gift of life.

As our climate is changing, give us the compassion to care deeply that people are suffering now, from spoiled harvest and violent storms, from drought and flood. Give us the imagination to see that future generations are in peril and may not know the beauty we see.

May our actions reflect a love for your world our prayers be shaped by a longing for justice for all, and our imaginations inspired to hope for a world free from poverty. Amen
