Skin Disorders By Mrs. S. Jackson

Infections Bacterial Caused Include –IMPETIGO - highly contagious skin infection that usually produces blisters or sores on the face and hands, is one of the most common skin infections among kids.

–ACNE – overproduction of sebum, leading to clogging of pores. When bacteria begins to fester in clogged pore, a pimple results.

–NECROTIZING FASCIITIS - a wound that becomes infected with Strep bacteria. These bacteria destroys soft tissue at the subcutaneous level.

Amy Copeland A 24 year old student at West Georgia University Slashed her calf when the zip-line snapped May 1 along the Little Tallapoosa River. Emergency room doctors closed the wound with 22 staples and released Copeland. But pain continued and wound became infected

May 4 th (3 days later) was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis – wound was dark purple Left leg (one with wound) was removed at the hip Amy goes into cardiac arrest and prognosis is poor Both hands turn black and are amputated She has recovered and has been fitted with bionic arms

Each year in the US, there are about 650-800 cases of necrotizing fasciitis; this is likely an underestimation as some cases are probably not reported. 20% of the cases are fatal

MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) Staph is a germ that often lives in the noses and on the skin of healthy people and spreads from person to person on contaminated hands, skin, and objects. Some staph called MRSA (Methicillin- Resistant Staph aureus) cannot be killed by certain antibiotics – called beta lactams – which are commonly used to treat staph.

What to do to Prevent Staph Skin Infections Keep your hands clean by washing well with soap and water or using an alcohol hand gel. Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed. Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

What are the signs and symptoms of MRSA infection? Staph skin infections, including MRSA, generally start as small red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. These can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses that require surgical draining. Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. But they can also penetrate into the body, causing potentially life-threatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.

Fungus Caused Include –ATHLETE’S FOOT - a very common skin infection of the foot. When the feet or other areas of the body stay moist, warm, and irritated, this fungus can thrive and infect the upper layer of the skin. It can occur anywhere on the body, including the scalp, trunk, extremities (arms and legs), hands, feet, nails (yellow nails) and other areas

–RINGWORM – occurs in warm, moist areas. Ringworm is more likely when you have frequent wetness (such as from sweating) and minor injuries to your skin, scalp, or nails. Itchy, red, raised, scaly patches that may blister and ooze.

–DANDRUFF – accelerated keratinization that produces flakes and itching. –may be caused by a fat-eating, yeast- like fungus, which lives on the scalps of most healthy adults without causing problems. But sometimes it grows out of control, feeding on sebum and causing irritation that leads to increased cell turnover.

Not Infections –ECZEMA - can be triggered by just about anything (chemicals, fabrics, heat and dryness) coming in contact with the skin. Dry, flaky skin appears over red, inflamed areas, causing intense itching and burning. Seems to have a genetic link.

–URTICARIA – or hives. An allergic condition characterized by reddish, elevated, itchy bumps or patches. May be triggered by food, exercise or chemical contact.

–PSORIASIS – the body produces too many skin cells. Normally skin cell turn around is 28-30 days, but with psoriasis turn around is 1 week. Produces sore, itchy scaly skin. Genetic.

Granuloma Annulare Granuloma annulare (GA) is a common condition of unknown cause. It appears most often over knuckles and other joints or in places that are subject to frequent, mild injury such as the back of the hands or top of the feet. It is seen most often in older children and young adults. The "rash" of GA is symmetrical and formed by skin colored bumps. The bumps often expand or join to form rings. The center of each ring may be a little depressed, pale or light brown. GA usually has no symptoms, but it may be tender. It may come and go, only to return again. Most cases clear up after a few years with or without treatment.
