1 Welcome to Open House! Ms. Michaels’ and Ms. Hancock’s Third Grade

2 Schedule Overview Morning Meeting Literacy Block to include Daily 5, readers and writers workshop Math Workshop 2 weeks of Science / 2 weeks of Social Studies Technology Specials- Spanish, P.E., Health, Art, Music, Drama, STEM, Chess

3 Behavior Management Positive Approach for ALL students Students have a pom-pom jar for class reward Students have individual charts for classroom coupons Parent communication will occur ONLY if the behavior reoccurs and distracts the learning environment

4 Grading Homework10% Classwork/ Class Participation 25% Quizzes30% Tests/ Projects 35%

5 Homework Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday Homework will reflect what was taught that day as a review and practice Homework will be graded for proficiency Homework will count as 10% of their grade

6 Homework Reading- 15-20 minutes every school night Writing- reading reflection with 2-4 sentences answers Math- practice examples Spelling- one week based on vocabulary workbook, one week based on words from their daily writing Handwriting- practice manuscript and cursive Projects- intergraded throughout the curriculum

7 Reader’s Workshop Mini Lesson Read Aloud Guided reading groups Independent practice Interactive journals Partner talk Unit of Study – Reading different types of literature (fiction, non-fiction, biographies, poems, etc.) – Variety of Leveled books – Informational text with strong vocabulary – Fluency – Comprehension

8 Daily 5 Management Tool Used during the Literacy Block Read to self Read to someone Word work-vocabulary Work on Writing Listen to Reading-Example Epic App

9 Writer’s Workshop Mini Lesson Independent practice Conferencing Our first area of writing is personal narrative Unit of study – personal narratives – letters, informational writing realistic fiction, fantasy, and poetry – Speaking and Listening skills – StrongVocabulary Usage

10 Math Workshop Mini lesson Guided math groups Math rotations to include individual practice, math games, use of manipulatives, and Iready Units of study – Expressions & equations – Number in operations fractions – Measurement & data – Algebraic thinking – Number Sense – The number system – Geometry – Statistics & Probability

11 Science Land Features Water Features Natural Resources Earth and Space Animals & Plants Interactions Matter & Energy Motion & Force

12 Social Studies Communities Map & Globe Skills Analysis Economic & Resources Citizenships Government

13 Technology Students receive their own IPad 40 minute class devoted to technology Graded based on National Education Technology Standards for students The goal is to develop skills that enable students to function in an increasingly complex and informational rich society

14 Technology Students will learn – Basic operations – Technological problem solving and decision skills – How to create multimedia presentations such as digital stories – Resources for researching – Solve current hardware problems – Use digital instruments & measurement tools – Debate effect of existing & emerging technologies

15 Assessments Formative – Questioners/ pre tests – Journal entries – Conferences/ interviews – Self/ Peer evaluations – Class discussions – Observations – Running records Summative – Tests – Quizzes – Projects – Presentations – Portfolios – IReady

16 Field Trips 1 st Friday of Every Month there is a Library Trip Raleigh City Museum, September 24 th Duke Homestead, October Symphony/ Kanki, November 10 th Art Museum, December TBA
