1 Defending the Zone Read Attack with “G” Defensive Concepts
Moving from “G” Defense to 425 and Split Coverage Concepts Defending the Zone Read Attack with “G” Defensive Concepts

2 Why we do want to play Split Coverage to a Spread Offenses?

3 Why Split coverage not pure robber coverage?
The match up of the Backer robbing #3 creates a series of problems #3 runs vertical. Match up…slot vs. Backer. Scheme Inside zone Play Action Pass

4 Inside Zone Play Action – Four verticals
# # T Q F Z X Y # # W T T $ Wo Be M B C # C # In A Bind F # # “G” Defense Pressure

5 Why Split Coverage?

6 Why split coverage. Playing the split coverage concepts allows the following things to occur. It creates carry over teaching from “G” package allows our athletes to play with maximum speed. Defensive scheme Individual technique Permits us to play seven defenders against the zone read scheme. Defend four verticals with confidence .

7 How did we get to Split Coverage Concepts?

8 Alignment Progression
Initially we started playing double digit coverage to double slot triple option teams and some Wing “T” attacks Alignment Progression FS set the coverage. Play the 1st Passing Strength. Play the 2nd digit away from strength. Rob to all three by one. Play thumbs (wolf) on the back side. Backers balanced the formation.

9 No Motion Robber Coverage Two Read (Two Kathy)

10 Wolf, Mike and Backer return to home base.
Three Step Motion Robber Coverage Wolf, Mike and Backer return to home base.

11 Wolf, Mike and Backer return to home base.
Flat Motion Free Robs #2 Backer Robs #3 Robber Coverage Wolf, Mike and Backer return to home base.

12 Applying the concept to Spread Attack (Zone Read)

13 We transferred the concept to defending the Zone Read Teams.
Alignment Progression FS set the coverage. Play the 1st Passing Strength. Cover 5 – Robber Coverage Play the 2nd digit away from strength. Cover 4 – Two Kathy/Read Hold over from Dime. Rob to all three by one. Play thumbs (wolf) on the back side. Backers balanced the formation.

14 We will minus our backers to balance the Formation.
We will play a two deep match coverage (Cover 4) away from the Free safety. We will play base defense to the field. Using the same techniques and alignment rules as “G” defense. G Cover 54 We will minus our backers to balance the Formation. Stud, Bear and Free as in G defense

15 G Cover 54 Corner – Plays from a 1/2 turn .
Key #1 and stay on top until the flat is threatened. Drive when the flat is threatened. Swap deep cross with safety. G Cover 54 Half player. Stem to a level of 11 yards - Key #2 and cover #2 vertical. Two voids the vertical match #1. Mike - Apex Player - play run 1st wall #2. ILB - Wall #3 any crosser.

16 half player stays on top of #2 and corner plays over #1.
G Cover 54 If #2 is vertical the half player stays on top of #2 and corner plays over #1. The Mike expands to the curl.

17 the flat. The half player will play over #1.
G Cover 54 If #2 attacks the flat, the corner will come off his half turn and drive the flat. The half player will play over #1. The Mike expands to the curl.

18 G Cover 54 If #2 crosses he will be walled by the Mike.
The corner will stay over #1 and the ½ player will help to the post.

19 G Cover 54 -TE Trips to the field
Rob to Trips Spur must buzz flat. Backer use robber technique if TE Vertical. Single receiver on the Backside. Make a thumbs call and play cover five technique. G Cover 54 -TE Trips to the field

21 Offensive attacks forced us evolve.

22 TE to the boundary in a 2 x 2 formation put the Mike in a position to fail.
The Mike when placed to the field greatly reduced his ability to be effective as a run and pass player. By utilizing the Field Defensive Concept we can keep the Mike into the boundary and lets him be more effect because he is in less space.

23 Field Concept Stud, Bear, Field Corner and FS align to the field.
Will, Wolf, Mike and Boundary Corner align to the Bench. Mike and Backer will minus. Wolf and Corner Align in 6 and ½ yard level. 2 x 2 – line up over #2 3 x 1 – Stack the EMLOS

24 2 x 2 Split coverage options
We use Robber and Cloud must of the time. Field Robber Cloud Rolled Corner Man - Field Man Kathy Read Coverage Boundary 2 Kathy Read Coverage Cloud Rolled Corner Man Boundary Man Robber Boundary robber Have not robbed to the boundary yet.

25 Field Cover 51, 52, and 54 Mike as a boundary player is made more effective because of the limited space he needs to cover.

26 Three by one formations put the Backer in a position to fail.
The Backer when expanded greatly reduced his ability to be effective as a run and pass player. Playing 5 Solo or 22 with a solo allows to let the backer play run first.

27 5 Solo Play Robber to 3 x 1 with a solo call Y ¼’s Concept
