Janet Update 3 rd VLBI Technology Workshop – 13th Nov 2014 - Groningen David Salmon

Topics Jisc / Janet status Janet6 Test networks E-Infrastructure & industry – Janet Reach… Cloud & datacentre acivities…

Jisc / Janet Two companies – Jisc - now a charity – the holding company – Jisc Collections and Janet – a wholly owned subsidiary Governance – Universities UK, Guild HE, Association of Colleges (AoC) - 30% each – Institutional - 10% Janet network charge / Jisc subscription model – Jisc wrote to all organisations connected to Janet – Charging model changed – commencing this August (14/15) – Details on Jisc web site – Subscription model may change in future… Some rationalisation taking place – See Jisc web site – “Front of House” NB david.salmon@jisc.ac.ukdavid.salmon@jisc.ac.uk

Janet 6 Optical 40/100G Long term – 10+ years for fibre leases – options to extend Transmission equipment refresh after ~7+ years Roadmap to next capacity increment per wavelength (400G ?) More flexible optical architecture Direct management of optical infrastructure Huge capability for additional capacity Continued integration & development of Regions Majority of “Research intensive” Universities “on-fibre” 100G to GEANT 700G Total external peering capacity (UK ISPs, bilaterals and IP commodity)

Janet6 and e-Infrastructure fibre

Janet Network Services IP – v4, v6 – unicast & multicast Layer 2 – Set close to MEF definitions (Metro Ethernet Forum) Point-to-point ethernet private wires VLANs etc. – Service definitions & costs/charges being developed – NB – Matching to GEANT services needs care “Lightpaths” – committed/uncommitted capacity… “Optical” – 40 & 100G – true optical – 10G – part of 4*10G multiplexed service

Site connectivity to Janet Current Janet policy - provide IP capacity according to need – Encourage sites to help research groups use the network – Don’t want “suppressed demand” Janet Network inherently very capable – enormous latent capacity – does cost money to enable this (and take time) light extra 40/100 Gbit/s wavelengths Procure extra access circuits

Astronomy community use “Lightpaths” to Manchester / Jodrell Bank – eVLBI work & expres/Nexpres – Aggregate 4-6Gbit/s over 10G access circcuit LOFAR – Station at Chilbolton – 10G physical connection – Connects to Dwingeloo via GEANT & Surfnet UK Internal – Cambridge to Edinburgh 1G – for data transfer

Bristol High Performance Networks Group Lab

Nipper !

SDNs / Openflow Desire to collaborate Broader UK discussions Maybe 10+ UK Universities interested in some way Janet will help – modest Openflow overlay to interconnect/interact Research Council funded projects – TOUCAN – EPSRC Programme Grant Bristol, Edinburgh, Lancaster £12M (£6M+£6M) – 5 Years Photonic – Layer2 – Access (Wireless +??) – Other smaller individual projects Many, many open questions…. – Management, partitioning/delegation…. SDN Overlay & connecting “Testbeds”

Requirements & considerations Topology – Richer than at triangle – can we afford more ? – maybe 4 nodes ? Management – Who does it ? Janet or a research project – mixed mode ? – scheduled ? Slicing / partitioning – Can this be realised ? Delegation of control / management within the partitions – What are the constraints (if any) ? Openflow – Which version ? 1.0 or 1.3 ? Legacy compatibility issues with projects such as Ofelia Real users & traffic ? – Maybe – Lancaster have achieved this Work with research community to refine these Acquire 3 or 4 devices and deploy them – Operational Autumn ?

Four node topology – Indicative & evolving London Bristol North Edinburgh Lancaster Bristol GEANT…Wor ld Midlands Maybe 2 physical 10G paths per node Others would be VPNs/logical paths Not determined precise configuration yet NOT Exclusive, but only TOUCAN lead sites shown

SDN Overlay & Aurora2 Janet service components Layer 3 (IP) – Tunnels/VPNs Layer 2 – Janet “Lightpaths” Ethernet / MPLS – committed capacity – VPNs – uncommitted capacity - future Layer 1 – Optical: whole wavelengths – 40G / 100G in core Londo n Bristol North Edinburgh Lancaster Bristol GEANT …Worl d

Some answers… Enterprise Hardware – HP 3800 (6) 4*10G + 48*1G – Brocade Netiron 2024C (2) 4*10G + 24*1G – NEC – much too expensive… Four node WAN topology - HP Four Janet lab systems – 2 Brocade – Broader technology & feature exploration

Controller software and management ? HP proprietary Open Daylight – Both HP and Brocade are compatible (we’re told !) Stanford flowvisor ? – Role in slicing / partitioning – Looks interesting & appropriate (on paper !) Much more work to be done here – Work with community to steer & advise

Janet - e-Infrastructure & Industry Outreach with moonshot pilot (AAI) Connecting to Janet – Janet Reach – State aid compliant scheme – Industry organisation must apply Innovative project Meet state aid funding proportionalities – Janet connection value / total project value Should be a high-capacity need – Scheme operating on 2 monthly cycles until around April 2015 (perhaps a little longer)

Datacentres Slough – Procurement & contracting complete – Janet Network provision in progress – Major centre on Janet – Very open - Tenants install their own racks & equipment Anchor tenants – QM, Kings, LSE, UCL, Crick, Sanger – Open to all Strong interest, probably more to come…

Cloud & outsourced services Building on brokerage work in past Looking a central procurement of cloud “capacity/capability” Cost savings through economies of scale ? Soliciting requirements – what do people want ? – Is there a requirement for elastic expansion into commercial capacity ? – seeking peoples’ views here Discussions on “UK Data Architecture” ! Commencing – Feed into Research Council Workshop next year SIGs with major communities represented – Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Natural Environment Weather & Climnate, Bioinformatics

Finish…
