5 Nation States During the late medieval period some of the feudal states of Europe developed into strong nation-states. Nation-state defined: large group of people who are ruled by one central government that share a common language and feel a sense of loyalty to the group (nationalism) Marked the decline of feudalism and the decline of the political power of the Catholic Church. France, England, Spain, and Russia.

6 Early Britain In the 800s, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms ruled Britain Sets foundation for Britain The Anglo Saxons and Vikings fought for control of England and exchanges control many times Edward the Confessor Anglo-Saxon ruler Died without an heir

7 Norman Invasion William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, led an invasion into England. Normandy is a region north of France that had been conquered by the Vikings. William was a descendant of the Vikings As the cousin of Edward, William claimed the English crown and invaded England with a Norman army. Battle of Hastings (1066) William defeated Harold Godwinson (Anglo Saxon who also claimed the throne)

8 England After victory on the British Isles, William the Conqueror ruled England and most of modern-day France from Normandy Centralizing the power of the monarchy. Claimed England was now his property Awarded fiefs to loyal nobles The following centuries would see the English kings Hold and add to their French lands. Strengthen their power over the nobles and the Church.

9 Problems Arise King Henry II- ruled after the death of William the Conquerer Established royal court of justice Sent royal judges to all of England once a year Settle disputes Jury trials Collected taxes Punished crimes Common law Rulings of the royal judges collected into a unified code of laws Many English nobles did not support Common law because it limited their power. NOBLES SAY “NEIGH”!!

10 Henry’s Successors Henry II was succeeded by his son Richard I, known as the Lion Hearted. When King Richard died, his younger brother, John, became king.

12 Magna Carta Pressure from the Nobility leads to changes. Magna Carta Signed by King John in 1215 (also known as Great Charter). Limited royal power (king) Gave the nobles more of a say in governance. Later influence the writing of the U.S. Constitution. Nobles Say ‘YAY”!!

13 Parliament Parliament Soon after the Magna Carta was signed, King Edward I created the Model Parliament Made up of people from the clergy, nobility, and merchant class to advise the king.

14 The knights gradually formed their own assembly within Parliament called the House of Commons. Nobles and bishops met separately in the House of Lords. The Parliament became powerful and, like the Magna Carta, provided a check on the king’s authority and weakened the great lords.
