ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 1

2 Report to the ICIS DA 2003 Newcastle on Tyne by Construction Information Limited Don Bunting (CIL) Robert Amor (IAI) Nominated work area: Timber framing

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 3 Timber Framing Property Set Required a whole development process: - Investigation of appropriate parameters - Selection of parameters for a specification tool - Creation of framing elements in ArchiCAD - Generation of an exemplar timber framed wall - Generation of the IFC data file - Processing of the IFC data file.

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 4 Specification of Data Model Specified major properties of timber framing: -Based on NZ regulatory framework and drawing upon properties used in other timber related initiatives -Identified units for properties -Identified required and optional properties -Fully specified values allowed for each property in a NZ context - Agreed on a set of properties to be incorporated into a CAD specification system.

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 5 Required and Optional Properties AttributeRequired/ Optional/ Conditional Description CommonNameRThe name (Radiata pine, Lawson cypress) by which the timber is usually referred to in the timber industry GradingRGrade (engineering, No. 1 Framing, No. 2 Framing) according to standards set by a recognised grading rules writing agency (SNZ, NZTIF, FRI, etc). Grading can be established by either visual structural grading rules, or mechanical stress grading SizeNominalRThe nominal (rough sawn) size including width (mm) x thickness (mm) when leaving the sawmill SizeActualOThe actual finished (thicknesses, gauged) size (+/- a variance) including width (mm) x thickness (mm) FinishRSurface finish (rough sawn, band sawn, gauged, dressed) MoistureContentRThe Moisture Content (MC) of timber, being the weight of water it contains as a percentage of the weight of oven-dried (no moisture) wood. Recommended moisture content expressed as an allowable range at the time of installation and/or enclosure as determined by a recognised rules writing agency (SNZ) TreatmentOChemical treatment to improve resistance to insect or fungal attack, applied by brush application, dipping, diffusion, or most commonly pressure impregnation. Chemicals used include boron salts, creosote (uncommon) copper-chrome-arsenate (CCA) light organic solvent preservatives (LOSP) and ammoniacal copper quaternary(ACQ) HazardClassRHazard class (H1-H6) as determined by a recognised rules setting agency (New Zealand Timber Preservation Council) EngineeredOAn Engineered Wood Product (EWP) created by special fabrication techniques (finger jointing, glulam, laminated veneer lumber – LVL) or by combining timber with other related wood and non- wood products (timber/ply members, composite wood and metal, flitch, or nail plate members)

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 6 Development in ArchiCAD Created nog and stud elements in ArchiCAD Provided elements with standard parameters as previously specified

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 7 Developed exemplar Simple timber framed wall created from nog and stud elements Set parameters for nog and stud elements in ArchiCAD 18 objects required

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 8 Generated IFC data Utilised inbuilt ArchiCAD IFC export 795 line IFC file generated ISO-10303-21; HEADER; FILE_DESCRIPTION (('ArchiCAD generated IFC file.'), '2;1'); FILE_NAME ('ICIS cad.IFC', '2003-04-10T10:25:35', ('Architect'), ('Building Designer Office'), 'PreProc - IFC Toolbox Version 2.0 (99/07/01)', 'Windows System', 'The authorising person.'); FILE_SCHEMA (('IFC20_LONGFORM')); ENDSEC; DATA; #2 = IFCDIRECTION ((0., 1., 0.)); #6 = IFCPERSON ('FamilyName', $, $, $, $, (), ()); #7 = IFCORGANIZATION ('OrganizationName', (), (), $); #8 = IFCORGANIZATION ('Graphisoft', (), (), $); #9 = IFCAPPLICATION ('ArchiCAD', 'ArchiCAD 7.0 (Graphisoft)', '7.0', #8); #10 = IFCPERSONANDORGANIZATION (#6, #7, ()); #11 = IFCTRANSACTION (1049927134, #10, #9); #12 = IFCAUDITTRAIL (1049927134, $, #10, $, #9, $, (#11)); #14 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.LENGTHUNIT.,.MILLI.,.METRE.); #15 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.AREAUNIT., $,.SQUARE_METRE.); #16 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.VOLUMEUNIT., $,.CUBIC_METRE.); #17 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.MASSUNIT., $,.GRAM.); #18 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.TIMEUNIT., $,.SECOND.); #19 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.DURATIONUNIT., $,.SECOND.); #20 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.THERMODYNAMICTEMPERATUREUNIT., $,.DEGREE_CELSIUS.); #21 = IFCSIUNIT (*,.LUMINOUSINTENSITYUNIT., $,.LUMEN.);

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 9 Processed IFC Data File - Identified all nog and stud objects - Extracted properties - Grouped by similar properties - Summarised across lengths of timber specified. Timber species: Radiata pine Timber grade: No. 1 Framing Timber treatment: H3 Timber finish: Gauged Size: 100mm x 50mm Lengths: 10 x 550 mm 4 x 2300 mm 2 x 2950 mm 2 x 2400 mm

ICIS/IAI – IFC Project 10 Further work? CAD tool support: -Parameters in ArchiCAD could be made more intelligent - A timber framing generator could be written to automate placement of nog and stud elements -Investigate a similar AutoCAD-based system - Internationalise the selected parameters.
