2 THE 1920’S WERE A TIME OF INNOVATION…. Many products were invented… And many products which had been invented earlier were popularized! These advances in technology changed Canadian Society!

3 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES Vacuum Cleaners Refrigerators Washing machines Toasters Stoves Irons These inventions had major impact on the lives of Canadian Women! Technology saved time!!!... This allowed women to focus on things outside housework!

4 THE AUTOMOBILE Prior to WW1, Canada’s main modes of transportation included ships and trains -Cars had been invented in the late 1800’s but were not popular

5 THE AUTOMOBILE “ The Big Three” Ford, General Motors and Chrysler

6 THE AUTOMOBILE – HENRY FORD -Henry Ford, a US businessman -The man most responsible for the growth of the automobile -His Model T was the biggest seller of the 1920’s o Most affordable at 398 dollars -The assembly line made Ford cars less expensive o Could make 100’s of cars daily instead of 3 or 4!

7 THE AUTOMOBILE – HENRY FORD Ford also paid his employees a fair wage This way they could afford to drive a Ford More sales!

8 THE AUTOMOBILE The growth of the automobile was good for Canada! -Branch-Plant System o American owned corporations built cars in Canada  Cheaper, less taxes!

9 THE AUTOMOBILE Secondary industries Oil refineries Gas stations Mechanics Insurance Rubber Pain Hotels Motels Restaurants Auto Related Employment Auto manufacturing Road building and maintenance Travel and Tourism

10 THE AUTOMOBILE By 1930 -1 million cars in Canada -128,000km of roads -Suburbs began to grow

11 THE TELEPHONE The phone was not invented in the 1920’, but became popular in the 1920’s 1921 - 1 in 4 families had a phone (25%) 1929 - 3 in 4 families had a phone (75%) Telephone lines were installed, making long distance calls possible! Made the country “Smaller”

12 THE RADIO Popularized in the 1920’s 1923 – 10,000 radios in Canada 1929 – 300,000 radios in Canada Helped Canadians stay abreast of current events Pro-sports skyrocketed in popularity, as the audience grew! Hockey Night in Canada was founded…
