3. © England Hockey 2007 3 Presentation is Important o The umpires are the 3rd team on the pitch o They should wear the same colour shirt o To look like an umpire is important o The umpires in England usually wear pink, black or yellow o Shoes suitable for turf are important o Waterproofs are useful

Fully Kitted Goalkeepers o Body protector o Leg protectors o Elbow pads o Hand protectors o Feet protectors o Full helmet o GK shirts } must be of a different colour to the field players The fully kitted GK MUST wear the helmet throughout the match and remain in their own half, unless TAKING a penalty stroke. NOTE: The 2007 Rules of Hockey (11 a-side) have changed. It is no longer mandatory to use a fully kitted GK. Refer to Rule 2.2.

The Pre-match chat o Who whistles what? o Side-lines and circles o Play approaching the umpire o Play moving away from the umpire o Working together – be a team! o Recording the score & any warning card/s Warm up!

17. © England Hockey 2007 17 The Centre Pass o Taken from centre of the pitch after the whistle is blown o Ball can be hit or pushed and can go in any direction o Ball must move minimum of 1m before it can be played (touched) by another player of the same team o No opposition player is permitted within 5m of the ball o All players in own half of the pitch

18. © England Hockey 2007 18 The Bully Awarded following: - A simultaneous breach of the Rules involving a player/s from both teams - An injury or any other incident where no offence is involved - The ball breaking in any way and needing to be replaced Taking the Bully - Ball near the position of the stoppage (but not <15m from the backline) - One player of each team, square to the ball; sticks to the right of it - All other players 5m away - Both players tap the ground behind the ball then tap sticks over the ball - Either player may then play the ball

19. © England Hockey 2007 19 Scoring a Goal o Circle lines are part of the circle o Ball must completely cross the goal line o Must be touched/played by an attacker while it (the ball) is in the circle o A “penalty goal” can be awarded at a Penalty Stroke

20. © England Hockey 2007 20 Ball out of Play How to restart the game when a ball goes out of play: HIT- IN awarded following the ball being played over the side-line HIT-OUT awarded following the ball being played by an ATTACKING player over the back-line. CORNER awarded following the ball being played UNINTENTIONALLY over the back-line by a DEFENDING player. PENALTY CORNER awarded following the ball being played INTENTIONALLY over the back-line by a DEFENDING player.

21. © England Hockey 2007 21 Injury o If there is a serious injury stop time immediately o How to restart the game after an injury - If the injury was due to an offence – award a free hit, PC, etc. - If the injury was not due to an offence – award a bully o If there is a minor injury do not stop time. The player should leave the pitch for treatment and a substitute player comes on

22. © England Hockey 2007 22 Substitutions No time out for substitutions except: 1.Serious injury 2.Goalkeeper substitution (if for another fully kitted GK) o Maximum number of substitutes: 5 o Roll-on and roll-off as often as they like/coach likes, throughout the game, excepting at penalty corners when only an injured goalkeeper can be substituted with a similarly equipped GK o No substitute should enter the pitch until the player leaving the pitch has left! o All substitutions should take place near the centre-line on the agreed side of the pitch except kitted GK who may be substituted at the back line close to the goal

24. © England Hockey 2007 24 Penalties FREE HIT o The ball should be stationary o It should not be intentionally lifted o It must move at least 1m before it can be played by a player of the same team o If it is within 5m of the circle being attacked, all players except the taker must be at least 5m from the ball o Free hit to the defence in the circle can be taken anywhere in the circle or up to 14.63m in line with the offence

25. © England Hockey 2007 25 Penalties PENALTY CORNERS are awarded for any one of 5 reasons: 1. For an offence by a defender in the circle which does not prevent the probable scoring of a goal 2. For an intentional offence in the circle by a defender against an opponent who does not have possession of the ball or an opportunity to play the ball 3. For an intentional offence by a defender outside the circle but within the 23m area they are defending 4. For intentionally playing the ball over the back-line by a defender 5. When the ball becomes lodged in a player’s clothing or equipment while in the circle they are defending

PENALTY CORNERS o Positioning of players: involved} attack & defence non-involved} attack & defence o If the first shot at goal is a hit, the ball must not be on a course that would cross the goal line above the height of the backboards o The ball must travel outside the circle before a goal can be scored o If the ball travels beyond 5m of the circle, the PC is over o Completion of the PC at half-time and full-time. When is the corner over?

PENALTY STROKES are awarded for the following o For an intentional offence in the circle by a defender against an opponent who has possession of the ball or an opportunity to play the ball. o For an offence by a defender in the circle that prevents the probable scoring of a goal. o For persistent early breaking off of the back-line by defenders at penalty corners.
