4 WHAT IS A CONJUNCTION? What is the job of a conjunction?

5 WHAT IS A CONJUNCTION? A conjunction joins two sentences together; it turns two sentences into one. The boy was cold. He forgot to wear his coat. The boy was cold he forgot to wear his coat.

6 WHICH WORDS ARE CONJUNCTIONS? These words can change two sentences into one!

7 WHY DO WE USE CONJUNCTIONS? Look at and read the two sentences on your table. One contains a conjunction and the other does not. Underline the conjunction Discuss the sentences with your parent; 1. How are they different? 2. What information do they give us? 3. Which sentence is better and why?

8 AN EXAMPLE Here I have two sentences: The dog was tired. He wanted to play. Which conjunction could I use to turn my two sentences into one?

9 EXAMPLE 2 See if you can try this one by yourself! I was tired. I went to bed. I was tired I went to bed.

10 ACTIVITY Now see if you can have a go at choosing the correct conjunction to join two sentences. Remember to think about which conjunction fits best- your sentence MUST make sense!

11 TIME CONJUNCTIONS How are time conjunctions different to the other conjunctions we have been learning about today? *When do we use time conjunctions? *What do time conjunctions help us to do? Can you use time conjunctions to tell your parents about your day?

12 ACTIVITY 2 Can you find the time connectives in your ‘Three Little Pigs’ sentences? Please underline them. Now match each sentence to the correct picture. Remember that time connectives help us to put events into the correct order!
