MATH UNIT 2 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers (5.NBT.7)

 BIG IDEA!  We can understand and explain the processes of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to the thousandths. 5.NBT.7

ESSENTIAL QUESTION  Why is the ticket price on an item different from the price at the register?

OBJECTIVE (LEARNING GOAL)  By the End of the Lesson(B.E.U.), we will divide decimals by whole numbers.  Pair/Share

APK: WHAT DO WE ALREADY KNOW?  3,500 ÷ 50 = 70  Which number is the dividend?  Which is the divisor?  Which is the quotient ?

APK: WHAT DO WE ALREADY KNOW?

IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW…  Learning to divide decimals by whole numbers will help you do well on tests.  It will also help you divide money!  What other ways can you think of? Pair/Share

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT  Dividing a decimal by a whole number is similar to dividing whole numbers!  To divide a decimal by a whole number… 1. IGNORE THE DECIMAL POINT 2. Use division or long division (Does McDonald Sell Cheese Burgers?) 3. Then re-insert the decimal point in the same spot as the dividend (the number being divided).

I DO: LET’S DO SOME EXAMPLES  Divide 9.1 by 7  1. Ignore the decimal 13  2. Use Long Division (DMSCB) 7 ) 9.1  3. Put the decimal in the quotient 1.3  (directly above the decimal in the dividend) 7 )9.1

REMEMBER  You can use multiplication to check your answer: multiply the quotient by the divisor.  If the answer does not come out evenly, (without a remainder) round the quotient to a specified place-value position.

LET’S DO MORE… WE DO  White Boards  Page 296 #1  Pg. 297 #2

YOU DO…  Page 298 # 9-19 odd  Page 298 # 21 & 23 word problems  When you finish, pair up and compare your answers with a partner.  We will correct them all together.

CFU: LET’S CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING  What is the BIG IDEA for this lesson?  What is our Objective (Learning Goal)?  What are the steps to divide a decimal by a whole number?
