2. THE FOREST There used to be a house in the woods. There lived and granny. She was poor but her house was neat and nice. One morning she heard a noise, went out to find out there were men sawing the trees. The granny shouted at them: ‘Why are you cutting the trees? Where are the animals going to live?’ The woodmen continued their work not paying attention to the old lady. The animals around were looking at them sadly – the playful squirrel, the scary bunny, the shy dear and the humming nightingale. The granny felt so sorry for the poor animals that on the next day she went straight to the village Mayor. -Mayor, come see them sawing the woods.

3. On the next day the mayor headed to the forest to check what was going on, the wood had been cut down. Not a tree was left and all the animal were gone. All that was left behind were bare logs, broken branches and fallen nests. The mayor was furious and promised to punish the guilty ones. The grandma asked him: ‘What is going to happen to the animals who lost their homes?’ ‘I will think of something!’ said the mayor.

4. He returned to the village and informed the police. The police started a search and soon caught the criminals. They were taken to court. The judge not only sent them to prison but also sentenced them to re-plant all the trees they had cut in the forest. The criminals fulfilled the judge’s commands and planted the sawn trees back under police surveillance cursing the day they had ever thought of sawing the forest. They realised their mistake and promised never to do that again.

5. Some years passed. The trees grew up and became big ones. The hole forest was all green again. The animals came back and built their homes once more. The mayor appointed some guards to a post to keep an open eye for the order and calmness of all forest living creatures. The grandma was also pleased and the mayor continued his work for many years.
