2 New Year's Eve New Year‘s Eve is observed on December 31, the final day of the Gregorian calendar, the day before New Year’s Day. New Year‘s Eve is a separate observance from the observance of New Year’s Day.

9 England Hundreds of thousands of people gather for London's New Year fireworks at the London Eye. Clocks symbolize the transition that occurs at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve.

12 Japan The day is a preparation day to welcome toshigami ( 年神 ), new year's god. Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times at midnight. This tradition is called joya no kane ( 除夜 の鐘 ) which means "bell rings on new year eve's night."

13 Japan The rings represent 108 elements of bonō ( 煩惱 ), defilements, or Kilesa in Sanskrit, which is said people have in their mind. which is said people have in their mind. The bells are rung to repent 108 of the bonnō.
