3 Basic facts 50 states a federal republic The USA comprises of 50 states and a federal district (District of Columbia) of the capital city Washington D.C. → a federal republic 318 million inhabitants the third most populated It has a population of 318 million inhabitants – it is the third most populated country in the world 48 states and Washington, D.C Alaska Hawaii archipelago The 48 states and Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. Alaska is the northwestern part of North America and Hawaii is an archipelago (= a group of small islands) in the mid- Pacific. The country also has several territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean (Guam) EnglishSpanish The main spoken language in the United States is English, but in many areas Spanish is spoken The biggest cities are New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco

The head of each state is the governor. three branches The federal government consists of three branches: legislative power Congress Senate House of Representatives the Capitol 1.The legislative power represents Congress which is made up of the Senate (100 senators, two from each state) and the House of Representatives (435 members). The seat is in the Capitol presidentexecutive power (the White House) 2.The president is the head of the executive power (the White House) Supreme Court judicial power 3.The Supreme Court holds judicial power.

George Washington became the first US president. American Civil War Confederacy UnionAbraham Lincoln The American Civil War (1861–1865) - 11 southern slave ‑ keeping states declared their separation from the United States and formed the Confederacy. They fought against the Northern States (the Union) where slavery had been abolished.
