ESSENTIAL QUESTION How are exponents and multiplication related to each other?

EXPONENTS Exponents: a short hand (abbreviation) for repeated multiplication of a number, Called the base, by itself. EX: 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 is written 5 4. 5 is the base, and 4 is the exponent or power.

EXPONENTS The exponent only applies to the number next to it. 4x + 9 3. The power only applies to the 9, not the 4x. Any number to the power of zero is equal to 1.

EXPONENTS Multiplying exponents: 5 4 x 5 3 could be written, (5 x 5 x 5 x 5) x (5 x 5 x 5) or 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 Which can be written as 5 7. For multiplication you add the exponents.

EXPONENTS Dividing Exponents. 3 5 3 4 = This can be written as: 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 After cancelling 3 1 For division you subtract the exponents

EXPONENTS Exponents of exponents. (4 4 ) 3. 4 4 x 4 4 x 4 4 4x4x4x4 x 4x4x4x4 x 4x4x4x4 4 12 Multiply the exponents
