4 4 S UMMARY OF F INDINGS Assets: Upper Manhattan Organization's total assets had an average of $4.5 million over the course of the study period. Zip code 10029 contributed to driving up total assets for Upper Manhattan. Liabilities: Upper Manhattan’s total liabilities averaged $1.1 million. Zip code 10029 contributed to driving up total liabilities for Upper Manhattan. Operating Revenue: Upper Manhattan’s Operating revenue increased by almost 50% from fiscal year 2009 to 2010. Zip Code 10027 had accumulated operating revenue for $109 million. Expense: The average expense for Upper Manhattan peaked in fiscal year 2010 to $ 1.7 million. Zip Code 10027 had the highest total expense for all Upper Manhattan Zip Codes at $ 109 million. Paid Attendance: Paid attendance in Upper Manhattan averaged 9,577 attendees across the study period. Zip Code 10029 reported the largest number of paid attendees from organizations that are mostly categorized as museums or performing art centers. Employment: Upper Manhattan reported an average full-time employment of 12 employees and a part- time employment of 18. Both variables remained stable over the course of the reporting period. Salaries and Fringe Expenses: Average Salaries and Fringe benefits peaked in fiscal year 2010 to over $900,000. Organizations such as Union Settlement Association, Apollo Theater and Museum for the City of New York contributed to the high reported values in zip code 10027. Capital Investments: Upper Manhattan had reported an average in capital investments of $ 2.6 million. Organizations such as the Manhattan School of Music, the Apollo Theater and the Studio Museum of Harlem contributed to driving up the capital investments for zip code 10027. Accumulated Depreciation: Upper Manhattan ranked second smallest in accumulated depreciation at $-45 million, and continued to decrease over the course of the reporting years.

5 5 R OLE OF C ULTURAL I NDUSTRY The cultural industry is a small share of the city-wide economy. This analysis uses Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) to provide local labor market statistics by tracking demographic characteristics in New York City. The share of age group 22-24 is largest in the cultural industry and makes up 3.3 % of the New York City economy. There is an even proportion of employees in the cultural industry and all other industries between ages 25and 54. Medium sized cultural organizations make up 3.2% of New York City’s economy. However, most organizations in the cultural industry and all other industries are large in size. High school, GED and some college education make up 5% of the total workforce in the NYC economy. College educated employers compose the largest share of the cultural industry and all industries. The cultural industry makes up.2% of New York City’s economy. Three indicators across these groups were used to determine similar cultural clusters throughout New York City. (Please see Appendix for a complete methodology.) One of the 18 organizations was unable to complete FY’11 before the data for this report was compiled. Two organizations who received substantial support from UMEZ, but who were re-locating from other areas, have been included in the Upper Manhattan cohort of 18: the Museum for African Art and the Visual Arts Research and Resource Center Relating to the Caribbean. Using the CDP database, key indicators were selected that reflect the focus of UMEZ’s nonprofit investment strategy: to strengthen capacity by supporting infrastructure and operational development, revenue generating activities and capital projects. (Please see Appendix for the list of indicators.) CDP data from FY’11 has been used to provide a “snapshot” of each hub and a spatial analysis comparing the hubs. 8 G ENERAL O BSERVATIONS 8 Despite the strong number of total participants, the number of groups per hub that provided data for all three years averaged only from 50% to 71%. Sixty-three percent of CDP participants provided data for all three reporting years. There are a total of 326 organizations found within the cultural hubs that participated in the CDP over the three years of this study; four appeared in multiple hubs. Although not reflected in the CDP data, the number of organizations that reside in City-owned facilities should be noted, as the City’s contributions to capital construction and repair is not included on the organization’s books. 9 C ITY -W IDE 9 There are 1,458 CDP participants based in all of New York City A total of 923 (63%) out of those 1,458 organizations submitted data to CDP for all three years of the study. The borough of Manhattan had the largest number of CDP participants, with 991 organizations. The borough of Manhattan was also the densest at 29.37 organizations per square mile.

Zip code 10027 had the largest number of CDP participants, with 25 organizations. Zip code 10027 was also the densest at 27.7 organizations per square mile. All seven zip codes in Upper Manhattan had a least one CDP participant.

Zip code 11217 had the largest number of CDP participants, with 61 organizations. Zip code 11217 was also the densest at 78.2 organizations per square mile. All eight zip codes in Central Brooklyn had a least one CDP participant.

Zip codes 11354 and 11368 both had the largest number of CDP participants, with seven in each. Zip code 11354 was the densest in Eastern Queens at 3.1 organizations per square mile. There were no CDP participants in zip codes 11358 and 11365.

34 O BSERVATIONS ON S PATIAL A NALYSIS 34 In 2011, Eastern Queens had the highest concentration of total assets behind the UMEZ organizations averaging to $8.2 million with zip code 11368 contributing the largest share at $16.8 million to the average. Upper Manhattan came second with assets averaging to $6.5 million. Upper Manhattan’s 2011 reported average liabilities amounted to $1.7 million, placing it second to the UMEZ organizations, but in front of all the rest. Zip code 10027 had Upper Manhattan’s largest share at an average of $2.9 million. In 2011, South Bronx had the smallest reported operating revenue averaging $150,000. Central Brooklyn sits in the middle of the seven hubs with an average of $1.3 million. Eastern Queens had the second largest reported expense at an average of $2.3 million, which is followed by Upper Manhattan and Central Brooklyn. Eastern Queens reported the largest average paid attendance at 42,674 with zip code 11368 contributing a sum 448,714 attendees. Upper Manhattan ranked fifth out of the seven Cultural Hubs with an average 10,885 paid attendees in 2011. Zip code 10029 contributed the largest share for Upper Manhattan with 245,022 paid attendees. In 2011, Eastern Queens ranked second in the number of full-time employees at an average of 13 full-time employees. Central Brooklyn employed 1,702 part-time employees in 2011, the most of all the Cultural Hubs, with zip code 11217 contributing the largest share. This hub ranked fourth with an average of 16 part-time employees. Upper Manhattan’s average salary and fringe expense amounted to $1.1 million, second to Eastern Queens. Eastern Queens reported the highest in Capital Investments at an average of $8.6 million. Upper Manhattan came third at $4.3 million. In 2011, Easter Queens reported the smallest average accumulated depreciate at $-2.5 million. Upper Manhattan ranked second smallest in accumulated depreciation at $-1.2 million.

46 46 Upper Manhattan’s average total reported assets increased from 2009 to its peak in 2011 at $6.5 million. Northern Staten Island and South Bronx reported stable values throughout all three years. Upper Manhattan reported an average increase in liabilities after fiscal year 2010, the sharpest increase in total liabilities among the seven CDP cultural groups. Upper Manhattan’s average operating revenue peaked in FY 2010 to $1.7 million before slightly declining in FY 2011. The UMEZ organizations increased to an average of $2.4 million in 2011. Upper Manhattan slightly increased to a peak in 2010 for average total expenses just above $ 2 million before declining in 2011. Eastern Queens lowest point was Fiscal Year 2010, just below Upper Manhattan at $1.9 million. Eastern Queens and the 18 UMEZ organizations had the highest paid attendance average. Upper Manhattan’s average paid attendance was stable at around 9,500 attendees. Western Queens and Northern Staten Island both reported similar and stable levels of average full-time employment (FTE). Upper Manhattan and UMEZ’s organizations showed decreases from fiscal year 2010 to 2011. However, Upper Manhattan’s decline was the sharpest. Upper Manhattan’s average part-time employment (PTE) trend line increased from 2009 to its peak of 22 PTE in 2011. South Bronx and Northern Staten Island were the only two hubs losing part-time employees. The lost occurred between fiscal year 2010 to 2011. Upper Manhattan’s average salaries and fringe expenses surpassed Easter Queens after FY 2009 to its peak in 2010 at $1.14 million before falling below Eastern Queens in the last quarter of FY 2010. The UMEZ organizations surpassed Central Brooklyn early in fiscal year 2010 to have an average capital investment of $2.7 million. Western Queens remained stable with an average capital investment between $1.1 million and $ 1.2 million. Average total accumulated depreciation became smaller for all Cultural Hubs except for Northern Staten Island. Two organizations who received substantial support from UMEZ, but who were in transition from other areas, have been included in this cohort: the Museum for African Art and the Visual Arts Research and Resource Center Relating to the Caribbean. Visual Arts Research was the only organization out of the 18 that did not contribute data for all three reporting years. Three indicators across these groups – total assets, total liabilities and operating revenue – were used to determine similar cultural clusters throughout New York City.

49 49 Step 1: Identified the zip codes of the UMEZ-funded 18 organizations listed above: 10027, 10029, 10030, 10031, 10032, 10035, and 10040. Step 2: Selected three indicators – Total Assets, Total liabilities, and Operating Revenue – that best reflect UMEZ’s criteria for assessing investment outcomes. Step 3: Included all organizations falling within each of the zip codes in step 1 as part of the count for the cultural hub methodology. Step 4: Determined the average for all organizations, in the 7 zip codes, by each indicator across fiscal years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Step 5: Calculated the mean of the average from step 4, then developed a range for each indicator’s average based on all organizations found in the 7 zip codes of step 1. Step 6: Selected other zip codes around New York City that fall within each indicator’s range determined from step 5. Step 7: Identified core zip codes that fall within the range of the three indicators, and selected those that were repeated multiple times: 10451, 11215, 11101, 11355, 10310.
