1 Tissue Repair

2 Animation to Begin…

3 After Tissue Injury… Capillaries become very permeable
Clotting proteins – form a clot / scab Nutrients – healing process Granulation tissue forms New capillaries grow into area Phagocytes – consume blood clot Fibroblasts – collagen fibers (scar tissue) Regeneration and/or fibrosis Growth of replacement tissue Scab detaches Scar (fibrosis) may be visible

4 Regeneration vs. Fibrosis
Regeneration = replacement by same type of tissue Fibrosis = replacement by scar tissue Made of dense c.t. (collagen fibers) Strong but less flexible & less elastic Depends on location & severity of wound

9 Ability of Tissues to Regenerate
Regen. well: epithelial & most conn. tissues Moderate regen: dense c.t. & smooth muscle Weak regen: skeletal muscle & cartilage No regen: cardiac muscle & nervous tissue (brain & SC) Replaced by scar tissue (fibrosis) Affects function (ex: multiple heart attacks)
