WELCOME

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Skills and Techniques Booting from Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 devices

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Windows 8 and Windows 10 use the new UEFI BIOS and have made booting from CDs, DVDs and USB drives more complex. I'll review why and what steps to take.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 This is a new type of BIOS that includes several enhancements. One of these is something called “Secure Boot”. UEFI is an acronym for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Secure Boot was introduced because of the glaring security hole that’s been present in almost every PC since day one, and is very simple and powerful: So what is that security hole?

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Do you have physical access to the machine ? Can you reboot that machine ? Can you boot that machine from a CD/DVD or USB device ? If all the above apply then you can gain total access to that machine.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 This is what allows SPEKTOR to boot from our target device and access the data without removal of the target storage media.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Windows 8 is the first version of Windows that can take advantage of UEFI and Secure Boot. Windows 10 also takes advantage of UEFI and Secure Boot. Secure Boot, when enabled, prevents this from being possible. It can prevent changes in the boot order, and it can restrict booting from only “official” boot images.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 If the signatures are good, the PC boots and the BIOS gives control to the booting operating system. When the PC or laptop starts, the BIOS checks the signature of each piece of bootable software.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 So, if I cannot access the BIOS or Press a key to present the boot menu what can I do ?

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Looking for a Windows 8 or 10 sticker on the device, is likely to tell us what the device was shipped with. First we must try to identify if the device potentially has Windows 8 or 10 If do you find one, it is best to assume that it is running windows 8 or has been upgraded to Windows 10.

Skills and techniques Session 2 Most large manufactures of computer hardware set the BIOS to boot from a CD first. This allows the user to place a recovery disk into the device and allow the user to perform a rebuild, or diagnose and repair any issues within the operating system

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Also Connect a USB CD/DVD ROM drive and place another boot CD into that drive. With this in mind the first way to try and boot our target device is to place the new SPEKTOR 64bit CD in to the system, before you switch the device on. If for some reason the BIOS or boot key for that device is not accepted, then there is a good chance that the system could read our SPEKTOR boot CD and boot the device.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 As long as the boot order is correct, the device should boot from the CD The SPEKTOR boot CD has a secure boot signature and is capable of booting a UEFI secure boot enabled BIOS.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 If the computer does boot in to Windows, we can take advantage of that boot.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From the Windows logon screen or ‘Start Screen’ or the ‘Charms Bar’ Click on the power option and then hold down the shift key while clicking on Restart.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 This will reboot into a “Choose an option” screen

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Click on Troubleshoot

Skills and techniques Session 2 And then click on Advanced options

Skills and techniques Session 2 Select UEFI Firmware settings.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 The device will now reboot and enter in to the BIOS automatically From here you have two choices

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Turn off Secure boot in the BIOS and change the BIOS to legacy mode. First Choice Here are the details on how to do this on ACER and HP devices Dell and a few others

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From inside the BIOS Use the right arrow key to select Boot. Press the Enter key, then use the down arrow to select Legacy BIOS - Press Enter. Press F10, then select Yes to save the changes and exit the BIOS.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From inside the BIOS Use the right arrow key to choose the Security menu, use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot Configuration, then press Enter

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Before you can use this menu, a warning appears. Press F10 to continue to the Secure Boot Configuration menu. Press F10 to continue to the Secure Boot Configuration menu.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Secure Boot Configuration menu Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, then use the right arrow key to modify the setting to Disable. Use the down arrow key to select Legacy Support, then use the right arrow key to modify the setting to Enable Press F10 to continue to the Secure Boot Configuration menu.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From inside the BIOS Expand the Secure boot options And select disabled on the right hand side Press F10 to save and exit

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From inside the BIOS Select Security Now change secure boot to disabled Select Exit to save and exit

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 From inside the BIOS Select boot Now select secure boot and change the option to disabled Select Exit to save and exit

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Some times its impossible to disable Secure Boot and we have to resort to our second choice.

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Second choice You can change the boot order; 1.CD /DVD internal 2.CD/DVD USB Save and exit. The hope is that one of the CD’s will be selected and boot the device

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Demonstration of Secure Boot on SPEKTOR and Secure Booting from a Surface PRO

Skills and Techniques - Session 2 Q and A
