9 Courses: Director’s Credentials These courses are only offered in SUMMER and through Extended Learning CDFS 420 7D1Art of Leadership-Early Childhood (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Director’s Credential The course will prepare students to gain effective leadership skills in early childhood settings, advocate for children, families and develop collaborative partnerships. CDFS 421 7D1 Child Care Center Administration (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Director’s Credential Focuses on skills necessary for directing a high quality child care center. Participants will gain knowledge in program planning, development, and maintenance. CDFS 422 7D1Business of Child Care (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Director’s Credential This course is designed to provide essential business and management lessons in operating a high quality early child care center. CDFS 493R 7D1 ( CDFS 423) External Funding of Early Childhood Programs (1 hr.) Fulfills 1 hr of Director’s Credential This course provides the opportunity to explore and practice skills necessary for successful fundraising, grant writing, and collaborations with community funding sources

10 Application for Director’s Credential Application for the Early Childhood Director’s Credential To earn the Three Star Director’s Credential you must have a baccalaureate or advanced degree in Child Development (Family and Consumer Sciences), Birth to Pre-K Certification, Early Childhood Education and successfully passed (C or Better) the following courses: CDFS 420The Art of Leadership and Professionalism in Child Care CDFS 421Child Care Center Administration CDFS 422 Business of Child Care CDFS 423External Funding: Early Childhood Programs Fill out the form below and attach with an official transcript. 12 Child Development and Family Studies Minor CDFS 110 Families Across the Lifespan ( required prerequisite) Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements Select six credit hours from the following three courses: CDFS 210 7D1 Introduction to Parenting (3hr.)Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements PR: CDFS 110. Introduction to terminology, descriptions, and explanations of the parental role and parent-child interactions. Emphasis on social and personal definitions of the parental role and on the problems and changes in parent-child relationships. CDFS 211 7D1 Infant Development (4 hr.) Fulfills 4 hrs of Minor requirements PR: CDFS 110. Developmental characteristics and environmental effects on the child during the prenatal period and the first two years with implications for guidance and care, includes practical experience working with infants and toddlers. CDFS 212 7D1 Early Child Development (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements PR: CDFS 110. Developmental characteristics and environmental effects on the child during the early school ages with implications for guidance and care, understanding of development and theoretical foundations. Select nine additional credit hours from the following four courses: CDFS 412 7D1 Adolescent Development (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements PR: Senior or Graduate standing and CDFS 110 or departmental approval. The adolescent in contemporary American culture, including normative physical, social, and personality development; relationships within various typical social settings. (e.g., family, school, community, peer group.) CDFS 413 7D1 Contemporary Issues in Family Relations (3 hr.) Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements PR: CDFS 110, Senior or Graduate standing or departmental approval. Study of recent research findings in the major areas of family relationships. Topics include effects of family violence, substance abuse, poverty, and health. Pre-requisite(s) and/ or co-requisite(s) may differ on regional campuses. CDFS 415 7D1 Family Interaction and Communication (3 hr.)Fulfills 3 hrs of Minor requirements PR: CDFS 110, Senior or Graduate standing or departmental approval. The family as a social group; processes related to well-being for a variety of family relationships. CDFS 421 7D1 Child Care Center Administration (3 hr.) ( Summer Only)Fulfills 3 hrs of Director’s Credential Focuses on skills necessary for directing a high quality child care center. Participants will gain knowledge in program planning, development, and maintenance.

13 Infant and Toddler Minor Required Prerequisite Courses:(Seven Credit Hours) CDFS 110. Families Across the Life-Span. 3 Hr. Explores the physical, psychological, and cognitive developmental changes of individuals who are functioning in family systems that change across the life span. CDFS 211. Infant Development. 4Hr. PR: CDFS 110. Developmental characteristics and environmental effects on the child during the prenatal period and the first two years with implications for guidance and care, includes practical experience working with children. Select Four Classes from the following six courses :( Twelve additional credit hours) CDFS 210. Introduction to Parenting. 3Hr. PR: CDFS 110. Introduction to terminology, descriptions, and explanations of the parental role and parent-child interactions. Emphasis on social and personal definitions of the parental role and on the problems and changes in parent-child relationships. CDFS 430. Best Practices in PreK Movement. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110. The course will prepare students to plan, develop and implement and appropriate structured movement program so children from infancy through five can be physically active and set the stage for lifelong physical activity. (includes a practicum) CDFS 431 Infant Literacy and Language Development.3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110, CDFS 211. This is an advanced course in infant and toddler language and literacy development. There will be a focus on the development of language and literacy within the home and the childcare centers. Students will develop activities that will promote infant language and literacy development. CDFS 493 Social Emotional Development of Infants and Toddlers. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110 CDFS 432 Early Socio-emotional Growth and Development. 3Hr PR CDFS 110, CDFS 211. This is an advanced course in infant and toddler social and emotional development. There will be a focus on the development of emotion and the development of relationship with caregivers and peers. Students will develop activities that will promote infant socio-emotional wellbeing. CDFS 421. Developing and Administering a Child Care Center. 3 Hr. Focuses on skills necessary for developing and implementing sound program management of different types of early childhood education centers. (Summer only) CDFS 491A Professional Field Experience (Community Internship)PR CDFS 110, CDFS 211. 3 Hr. Prearranged experiential learning program to be planned, supervised and evaluated for credit by faculty and field supervisors. Involves temporary placement with public or private enterprise for professional competence development

Explores the physical, psychological, and cognitive developmental changes of individuals who are functioning in family systems that change across the life span. Select six credit hours from the following Three courses: CDFS 112 Marriage and the Family (3hr.) (required for the minor) Explores the various dimensions of self-development and personal preference relevant to dating, mate selection, marriage, having children, parenting, divorce, and remarriage. CDFS 210. Introduction to Parenting. 3Hr. PR: CDFS 110. Introduction to terminology, descriptions, and explanations of the parental role and parent-child interactions. Emphasis on social and personal definitions of the parental role and on the problems and changes in parent-child relationship. CDFS 212. Early Childhood Development. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110. Physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children from three-to-seven years of age with implications for guidance and care in practical settings. Select nine additional credit hours from the following four courses: CDFS 412. Adolescent Development. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110, The adolescent in contemporary American culture, (required for the minor) CDFS 413. Contemporary Issues in Family Relations. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110. Study of the recent research findings in the major areas of family relationships. Topics include effects of family violence, substance abuse, poverty, and health. CDFS 414 Adolescent Problems/Disorders. PR: CDFS 110 Focuses on developmental psychopathology with particular attention to patterns of non-normality in adolescent developing including behavioral and emotional problems. Various preventions and intervention strategies are examined relative to the topic. CDFS 415. Family Interaction and Communication. 3 Hr. PR: CDFS 110, The family as a social group; processes related to well- being for a variety of family relationships.
