2 UWS Academic Careers & Development The Context: The UWS Academic Career project takes a holistic approach to development and recognition of academic contributions throughout the Academic Life Cycle and considers the nature and capabilities of a successful Academic Workforce of the future. The UWS Academic Career Project aimed to: Recognise equally the multi-stranded nature of academic work Acknowledge and address the fact that academic roles and expectations can change over a working lifetime Move away from a “one size fits all” approach to staff support and career development and recognition Make role expectations clear and align with support and recognition strategies Provide practical and realistic guidance, development and recognition tools and strategies

3 UWS Academic Careers & Development Engagement and Progress: The UWS Approach Key components: Plan university consultations with staff at many levels of appointment, including Deans, the professoriate and academic staff undertaken between February and September 2014 with over 115 staff contributing My Voice survey and consultation data reviewed and included Discussion Paper and Capabilities framework developed with key recommendations presented to and endorsed by the Vice- Chancellor and Executive Alignment with University’s Strategic Directions 2020 and Workforce Planning requirements for the academic workforce of the future.

4 UWS Academic Careers & Development The Outcomes: Resources and impact The UWS Academic Career project has delivered: An Academic Capability Framework which identifies core capabilities grouped under four domains: (a) Engagement, influence and impact (b) Governance and organisation (c) Knowledge and intellectual abilities and (d) Personal effectiveness Performance Expectations Guidelines which support academics to review and assess outcome-driven performance and impact of their work Career Resource Guides and online resources which support Academic career progression and recognition / promotion An inclusive and evaluative series of Targeted workshops and programs which support career development, particularly for Early Career Academics Checklists which guide the capture of evidence for Academic achievement and support the promotions process.

5 UWS Academic Careers & Development Lessons Learned Achieving Engagement - through wide f2f consultation as well as taking heed of surveys (My Voice); - development of drafts of materials for active consideration and critique (giving people something to work with); - working at all levels of the institution, with staff on diverse roles Align with your institutions strategy and deliver evidence based recommendations for presentation to key decision makers Provide concrete practical materials and guidance which resonant with staff and deliver to expectations Make it obvious that there is a way to evidence and support all aspects of the academic role
