MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE DEFINED Motivational Climate – setting up a climate or environment that promotes development of a task or mastery orientation and learning beliefs rather than an ego orientation and capacity beliefs. 4. “TARGET” CONCEPT TO CLIMATE DEVELOPMENT TARGET – is a systematic approach to using 6 types of strategies to create a mastery climate. TARGET -- provides a comprehensive way to create change that will promote mastery, challenge seeking behaviors.

6. AMES’ INTERVENTION STUDIES In a 3-year study, elementary school teachers were trained during a week long workshop on how to develop a mastery climate using TARGET principles. Actual strategies were developed by the teachers based on TARGET principles, their particular curriculum and instructional style.
