1 UNIT 14: INSTALLING & MAINTAINING COMPUTER HARDWARE

2 FROM THIS UNIT THE LEARNER WILL:
A understand the benefits and implications of installing and maintaining hardware in technology systems B plan installation and maintenance of hardware in a technology system C install, maintain and test hardware in a technology system D review the modified technology system.

3 Assignments: A1 – Investigation: Prepare a presentation or a report for the ‘client’. (P1 M1 D1) Assignment 2 – Planning: Your task is to plan the installation and maintenance of hardware to fulfil the user requirements for the ‘client’. (P2, P3, M2, D2) Assignment 3 - Repair and Upgrade: Practical application, you must demonstrate that you can follow your plan (P4, P5, M3, M4, D3)

4 Assignments: Assignment 4 – Review: Prepare a presentation or a report for the ‘client’ to evaluate the modified technology system, explaining why and how it meets the brief (P6, M5, D4)

5 LEARNING AIM A: UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS AND
IMPLICATIONS OF INSTALLING AND MAINTAINING HARDWARE IN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS

6 Learning Aim A Computer hardware
Internal External Reasons to maintain technology systems Benefits and implications of installing and maintaining hardware

7 Learning Aim A Computer hardware
Internal External Reasons to maintain technology systems Benefits and implications of installing and maintaining hardware

8 Learning Aim A Computer hardware
Internal External Demonstration of good and bad research work! The work you submit today will be marked by your peers If you wish it to remain anonymous do not include your name in the title of the work, - e.g. Joe Blogg’s work on Hardware or in the text.

9 Learning Aim A What hardware can you think of?
Compile two lists – one showing components which are internal e.g. processor the other showing external hardware e.g. printer There should be at least 6 items in each list. Give a brief description of each component/device that you have listed: What does it do? Who are the major manufacturers? What does it connect with?/How does it connect? Provide a picture. You have 1 hour to complete this task. Make sure that the folder is shared with me.

10 Peer Review Part 1 For the paper you have been assigned to review:
Are there two lists? How many components/devices are there on each list? Less than 6 on either list – 0 6 on each list – 1 More than 6 on either list and at least 6 on the other - 2 For each component/device that is listed:

11 Peer Review Part 2 What it does is not described or is described but not in the students own words – 0 What it does is adequately described– 1 What it does is very well described - 2 None of the major manufacturers are listed - 0 One major manufacturer is listed – 1 More than one major manufacturer is listed - 2 Connections are not described or are described but not in the students own words – 0 Connections are adequately described – 1 Connections are very well described - 2 A picture is not provided – 0 A picture is provided and attributed – 1 A picture is provided, attributed and captioned - 2

12 REASONS TO MAINTAIN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS
Know why we maintain technology systems, e.g.: to prevent faults occurring and/or to repair faults Routine Maintainence to upgrade internal components, e.g. processor, memory and/or storage, to improve performance to upgrade external hardware devices to improve performance to change system functionality, e.g. to network the technology system or allow printing/scanning.

13 REASONS TO MAINTAIN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS
Know why we maintain technology systems, e.g.: to prevent faults occurring and/or to repair faults Routine Maintenance to upgrade internal components, e.g. processor, memory and/or storage, to improve performance to upgrade external hardware devices to improve performance to change system functionality, e.g. to network the technology system or allow printing/scanning. This may be because of a change in the system, i.e. a new software installation

14 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Computer get Neglected

15 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Dust and Dirt

16 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Reduced Airflow

17 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Bugs

18 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Filth

19 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHY DO COMPONENTS FAIL?
WHAT REASONS CAN YOU THINK OF?

20 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHY DO COMPONENTS FAIL? Heat
accelerates aging causes glitches Dust build up prevents heat dissipation Dust can short out components Unstable power causes crashes and failures Static electricity can destroy components

21 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHY DO COMPONENTS FAIL?
What happens if a processor gets too hot? YMM

22 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Make a list of components that you could upgrade, give an example of an upgrade and say what effect that would have on the computer. Eg. Additional hard drive, 65GB to 1TB, increased storage capacity, allowing access to greater range of data, ability to store large files

23 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Monthly Inspection Look for dust and dirt
Check safe installation Overloaded power sockets Trailing cables Food and drink Listen for unusual sounds

24 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Cleaning
Use an air blaster to remove dust and debris Use approved products to clean screens Use an approved vacuum to remove dust from ventilation slots

25 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Cleaning
pZX4k

26 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Find an example of a new software installation that might require a hardware upgrade. Detail what that upgrade would be.

27 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Make a list of components that you could upgrade, give an example of an upgrade and say what effect that would have on the computer. Eg. Additional hard drive, 65GB to 1TB, increased storage capacity, allowing access to greater range of data, ability to store large files.

28 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Make a list of components that you could upgrade, give an example of an upgrade and say what effect that would have on the computer. Eg. Additional hard drive, 65GB to 1TB, increased storage capacity, allowing access to greater range of data, ability to store large files.
