Driving Innovation The Sustainable Agriculture & Food Innovation Platform ES KTN Engineering Solutions Event Begbroke 19th July 2013 Calum Murray Lead Technologist Sustainable Agriculture & Food Innovation Platform calum.murray@tsb.gov.uk

Driving Innovation Who are The Technology Strategy Board? We are the UK’s national Innovation agency. Our goal is to accelerate economic growth by stimulating and supporting business-led innovation. http://www.innovateuk.org/_assets/0511/technology_strategy_board_concept_to_commercialisation.pdf

Driving Innovation Everything we do is driven by one question – ‘Will it help UK business bring new ideas and technologies to market?’

Driving Innovation Our Thematic Priorities

Driving Innovation

Objective: To help UK businesses develop innovative technologies, production systems and supply chain solutions that will sustainably increase the productivity of the UK Agri-food sector, whilst reducing it’s environmental impact. Commitment: A £90m+ programme of investment over 5 years from 2010 - 2014. Co-funded by

Driving Innovation Collaborative R&D to Date New Approaches to Crop protection Sustainable Protein Production 32 projects funded ~£12million of grant ~£26m project value 29 projects funded ~£16m of grant ~£32m project value 32 projects successful ~£11.2m grant available ~£23.2m project value Food Processing and Manufacturing Efficiency

Driving Innovation Feeding the Future Innovation Requirements for Primary Food Production in the UK to 2030 Download the full report at www.feedingthefuture.info

Driving Innovation Feeding the Future Innovation Requirements for Primary Food Production in the UK to 2030Process A series of sectoral and cross-cutting workshops held during 2012, together with additional directed consultations Outputs were cross-reference with existing published Strategies and Research Priorities, to develop a set of Key Priorities and Researchable Issues that were producer-focused, generic and long-term These are supported by Key Recommendations and Next Steps identified that would facilitate delivery Draft report put out to consultation in November Final report approved in 6 th June 2013

Driving Innovation Feeding the Future Innovation Requirements for Primary Food Production in the UK to 2030 Horticulture Workshop - Fruit & Salad Crop Priorities Technology Utilisation - Engineering; Robotics Precision Tech Plant Breeding – “Omics”; resistance; accelerated root stock dev Systems based approaches – Soil Water and Nutrient interactions Integrated Control – Weed Pest Disease control – Bio and monitoring Ecosystem Services and Valuation –Pollinators, Biodiversity, Planning Skills and Training – Weed Pest Disease soil Social and Economic Science

Driving Innovation Feeding the Future Innovation Requirements for Primary Food Production in the UK to 2030 Develop remote monitoring, control and application technologies to optimise input use efficiency, improve animal health & welfare, sustain product quality and safety, reduce the impact of machinery traffic on land and promote effective delivery of environmental goods and services Integrate and utilise the increasing volume of yield mapping & recording, soil, crop and animal data in order to develop better decision support tools for integrated farming systems Improve platform flexibility, inter-operability and applicability to the UK environment in order to promote delivery of the above Utilisation of modern technologies to improve the precision and efficiency of key agricultural management practices. RESEARCHABLE ISSUES - Examples From Priority 1

Driving Innovation Measurement Technologies For Efficient AgriFood Systems (Phenotyping & Trait Measurement) Improving the Identification & measurement of key Production & Quality Traits Better understanding & application of Genomic Information Better Management decision making ‘in the field’ Productivity gains & Cost reduction Improved product quality & Reduced waste Reduced Environmental impact & improved Animal Welfare Global market for products & services Now Closed

Driving Innovation The Challenge The sustainable intensification of primary agriculture and improvements in the efficiency of the post farm gate processing represent significant challenges for the agri- food sector. The development and application of engineering solutions and precision agriculture technologies has an integral part to play in this process.

Driving Innovation Explore engineering and precision agriculture solutions across the agrifood supply chain Enhance resource use efficiency in the arable, horticulture livestock (Incl aquaculture) and food processing environment. Maximise marketable yield and profit potential Minimise any potentially negative environmental impacts associated with food Production Engineering Solutions Call Opens 23rd Sept 2013

Driving Innovation Opens 23 rd September Up to £13m Grant https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/technologystrategyboard/ events-view/-/events/7090814?p_p_auth=e5qqwBHS

Driving Innovation Arable Crop and Horticulture - Opportunities Soil management equipment Energy and power delivery technologies - Incl lighting Variable rate input application technologies Crop establishment, harvest and storage equipment Water use and management technologies Engineering solutions for weed, pest and disease control Crop stress monitoring/ assessment technologies Advanced mapping and recording All relevant precision agriculture technologies Integrated approaches to increase system compatibility

Driving Innovation Livestock (Incl Aquaculture) - Opportunities Handling and management equipment Livestock (incl Intensive) housing, Dairy technologies Robotics and automation Ventilation equipment Health and wellbeing monitoring/ assessment and diagnosis Animal feed manufacture, processing, storage and use GHG reduction technologies Waste management equipment Water use and effluent management systems

Driving Innovation “Processing Environment – Opportunities Process intensification Robotics and automation Low-energy and/ or low-water processes optimisation of cutting/ slicing scaling-down of processes wet processing/ late stage processing storage and distribution and retail technologies data return to systems improve production efficiency Waste reduction technologies

Driving Innovation Collaborative R&D Grant? The share of the grant can be determined by agreement between the partners subject to the following criteria:- The project must be business led At least 70% of project costs must be incurred by Business, So.. No greater than 30% of total project costs can be incurred by Academic partners Projects typically over 3 years and Total project costs typically £0.5m- £1.5m

Driving Innovation Key Assessment Criteria… 20 The Idea (Innovative achievable exploitable) The Market (Where, How Big, Exploitation Plan) The Consortium (Capability, Experience) Additionality (How will TSB make a difference) The Impact (How Big, Where and When)

Solving Business Problems with Environmental Data A feasibility study competition to create new value propositions that provide specific commercial benefits, increase resilience and address business risks by integrating environmental data with other sources. Up to £3m available Feasibility studies 3 – 12 months, £100k - £200k Include end-user and be business-led Integrate datasets, at least one environmental, from different sources Competition opens 30th September
