2. The Salinas Youth Art Contest is held every year in honor of Bastrop born artist - Porfirio Salinas. From 1986 to 2014 Bastrop Association for the Arts did an outstanding job of sponsoring the event. In 2015 the BISD Salinas Art Council carried on the tradition. In the fall of 2015 Bastrop Fine Arts Guild accepted the sponsorship of the Salinas Festival and Youth Art Contest & Scholarship. The theme for the 2016 Salinas Youth Art Contest is: Fiesta

3. Porfirio Salinas Porfirio Salinas was born in Bastrop, Texas. He was a landscape painter who is best remembered for his depictions of the Texas Hill Country. Salinas was described by The New York Times as United States President Lyndon Baines Johnson's favorite painter. Works by Salinas are in the Texas State Capital, the Texas Governor's Mansion and in a number of museums including The Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas. Salinas learned from watching Jose Arpa, director of the San Antonio Art School and was mentored by prolific landscape painter Robert Wood. Salinas was generally recognized as one of the most successful artists in the Southwest. He painted many subjects in the United States, Mexico and Europe but his most loved paintings are of the landscapes of the gently rolling hills and valleys of his native Central Texas
