3 Berkley High ► History of losing.  Five winning seasons in 40 years.  70’s – No winning seasons.  Multiple No win seasons. ► Poor facilities no locker room. ► Numerical weakness - 59 Kids. ► Kid problems – urban setting. ► Parent problems.  They hated me and I hated them. B

4 Berkley High ► Record  1989 (3-6 and 75 Kids)  1990 (2-7 and 85 Kids)  1991 (4-5 and 89 Kids)  1992 (6-3 and 92 kids)  1993 (6-3 and 95 Kids)  1994 (8-3 and 93 Kids) Regional Finalist  1995 (7-2 and 94 Kids)  1996 (8-2 and 95 kids) OAA DII Champions ► Stretch where we were 36 – 13. ► We defeated eight ranked team. ► 1994 - #2 Ranked Brother Rice. BB

5 Milford Football in 2000 ► Twenty years without a winning season.  1980 – 1999. ► Poor facilities.  Stadium, Field. Locker room and Practice Facilities.  Weight room. ► Numerical weakness.  95 kids. ► Our kids were soft. “Gear”. ► Youth Program had issues. ► Communication issues.

6 Milford High School ► Maverick Football 2000 - 2007  Six straight winning seasons.  Record 50-29.  Two KVC Championships.  Two District Titles.  Three play off appearances.  Stretch 24 -5.

7 Milford Football 2000 - 2007 ► Starting numbers in 2007 = 149. ► Youth League had three teams per age group. ► New Facilities built in 2002. ► Emphasis on “old school” values.  “Work to win” ► Pat Fox spoke for Milford Football.  Take responsibility for all playing time in the program.  I deal with all parent problems.  Friendly with a nasty temper.

8 Components of Building a Championship Program ► Finding the right job. ► Assessment of the program. ► Set foundations of the program. ► Get out to a fast start. ► Development of 45 days transition plan and put it into action.

10 Find the right Job. ► Does the job fit you. ► Will you get the needed support to win.  Support means money.  Teaching jobs for assistant coaches.  Facilities up grades. ► Has your employer demonstrated loyalty and integrity in the past?  Relationship between school and community.  Stability of Athletic staff.

11 Understanding the reality of the job. ► There is a reason that the job was open.  People usually do not leave a championship team on the table.  Good jobs are usually inherited.  Every job has warts. ► Most Problems can be overcome some problems maybe to big to overcome. You need to ask yourself this question. Do you want the job too much?

18 45 Day Transition Plan - Assessment  Key Questions that need to be answered. ► What are the core fundamental needs of the Program? ► What is the current state of the football staff? ► How many athletes do we have in the program? ► What is the perception of the football program?  School day observation.  View the past three yearbooks.  Interview former staff.  Listen to key teachers in the building.  Interview former players that will graduate in the spring.  Have a meeting with Key players and parents. Not always great athletes but great people. Seek help from A.D. and teaching staff. your kids.  Run Football Combine to access current physical ability of current players

19 45 Day TP Introduction of the program. ► Introduction of the “New Football Program.”  Players Meeting ► Conduct a players meeting – Recruit your own students.  Advertise the meeting.  Use video PA if possible. School TV or District Cable Access.  Post in High School and Middle Schools.  Use local merchant’s marquees.  ID key kids – Find them and invite them personally. ► Former players who dropped. ► Skilled athletes of other sports. ► Youth league legends.

20 45 Day TP - Parent Meeting.  Conduct Parent Meeting ► Advertise the meeting.  Take an advertisement in the local newspaper.  Get a radio interview if available.  Use local merchant’s marquees.  Make sure you get positive parent leaders in the room. ► ID key parents. ► Address previous issues first. ► Goals of Player/Parent Meetings.  Set the Tempo Now.  Communicate our philosophy that will be the backbone of the program.  Communicate expectations and goals of the program.  Express great leadership skills and be dynamic.  Outline parent communication process.  Review upcoming calendar and off season program. ► Make sure everyone knows that the Head Coach speaks for the entire program.

Installation of the Base Components of the Program ► Start “Platoons Program” - Build strength, speed, work ethic and team. ► Start skill development program with individual workouts.  Four player groups ► Quarterbacks. ► Quarterback and “X” and “Y” receivers. ► Quarterback and “T”, “H” and “Z”. ► Big man agility drills  Two weeks defense.  Three weeks offensive line. ► Seven man drills (Out of School)  Seven on Seven Preparations. ► Offensive Base package ► Robber Coverage  Option Drills ► Organize Summer Camps for June and July (Meet with hoops coach first).  Offensive camp. (Three days and six practices)  Defensive Camp. (Three days and six practices)  Youth Camp. ( Three days and three practices)

Build your Future Today.  Recruit the best athletes in the district. ► Middle School Recruiting – Meet with Youth and Middle School Coaches  New Players Draft  Middle school recruiting booth and advertisement.  Work hallways and gym classes.  Meet kids and let your new players meet them too.  Put jerseys on your kids.  ID team leaders and athletes – empower them to help recruit.  Recruit your own program. ► Prevent defections. ► Send personnel letters and meet with athletes individually. ► Show genuine concern for kids.  They have had an unpleasant experience in football. ► Losing ► Successful Coach leaves ► New School ► Seniors first – It’s their last dance.  Build positive relationship with youth league and middle school coaches.. ► Ask for their insight on the needs of the program. ► Ask for advise on how to reach specific athletes. ► Provide support.

Build your Future Today.  Build 2011 staff as soon as possible ► Hire core guys first – Coordinators. ► Interview the previous staff  Do they want to comeback?  Are they loyal?  Does the AD and Principal want them to return?  Access the strength and weakness of each.  Do they teach?  Will they fit in “Our Crew”.  Football Knowledge verse Football ego. ► Outside hires  Outside Coaches.  AD leads.  Former players.  Advertise.

It’s program development not just strength training!
