Organization Millard South High School

What does organization mean? Organizing means to put things together in an orderly way. When writing a paper, you will need to follow this order….  Introduction – the beginning of your paper  Transitions – moving from one subject to the next  Body Paragraphs Sequence – one thought following another in order Pacing – the speed of moving from one thing to the next  Conclusion – the last section of your paper

Introduction Ask yourself these questions before writing….  1) Does my beginning grab the reader’s attention?  2) Does it all tie together?  3) Did I use transition words that connect my ideas and details?  4) Did I arrange my paper in the BEST ORDER?  5) Did I sum up my main idea at the end of my paper so that it feels finished?

Organization The Body Paragraphs  support your main idea in your thesis statement. You will need to expand upon and give support for your main idea. Example: Thesis statement: Making a good impression can be accomplished by dressing appropriately, having good speaking skills, and being prepared to answer difficult questions. First, making a good impression starts with how you dress. The way you look is the first impression someone has of you, so you need to make it a good one. Begin with choosing a nice pair of slacks and a matching shirt. Your shoes should also compliment your outfit, along with any accessories such as earrings, a watch, or a belt. You will need to avoid clothing that shows too much skin or is too tight. In addition, make sure your outfit is neatly pressed and not full of wrinkles. Remember, you cannot change someone’s first impression, so you will need to get it right the first time. I.Introduction: Attention Getter and Thesis II. 1 st Body Paragraph **Transition A. What to wear B. What to avoid III.2 nd Body Paragraph **Transition A. B. IV. 3 rd /Final Body Paragraph **Transition A. B. V. Conclusion

Organization Sequencing and Pacing When you get ready in the morning, you put your socks on before you put your shoes on. THINGS NEED TO BE DONE IN ORDER! When you write, events or information need to be told in order of how it happened. Make sure that you use transition to help with pacing.

Organization Concluding Paragraph Concluding paragraphs represent your last chance to say something important to your readers. Your conclusion can…  Emphasize the purpose and importance of your paper  Explain the significance or consequences of your findings  Persuade your readers to do something  Bring the reader back to your main idea  Help the reader recognize that the writer is finished  Summarize the information  Restate the thesis using different words EXAMPLE: As you can see, making a first impression takes planning to get it right. You will only have one chance to do so, therefore, preparation is the key! Employers will often choose who they want to hire based off of their first impression. Being able to dress appropriately, having good speaking skills and being prepared to answer difficult questions will put you ahead of all the other applicants. I. Introduction: Attention Getter and Thesis II. 1 st Body Paragraph **Transition A. B. III. 2 nd Body Paragraph **Transition A. B. IV. 3 rd /Final Body Paragraph **Transition A. B. V. Conclusion

Ask yourself these questions regarding ORGANIZATION… 1. Does the beginning of my piece grad my reader’s attention? 2. Does everything tie together? 3. Are there transition words that connect my ideas and details? 4. Does my writing follow the logical sequence? 5. Does my ending sum up the main idea?
