2. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke R/ Glory to you O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. R/ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. ‘When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’

3. Since the age of 12 Jesus would have been to the synagogue in Nazareth every week on the Sabbath. He would have taken his turn to read. What was different this week?

4. Jesus told the men of Nazareth that he was there to fulfil the prophesy of Isaiah. ‘he has anointed me to bring good news…’ The secret was out – there was no turning back.

9. Dear God, you call each and every one of us to proclaim your good news to people who are poor, hungry, sad, lonely, bullied, scared, or weary. We do this through the choices we make and the actions we choose to take. May we do all that we can to answer that call. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
