"The features of the two men were distinctively different: William had dark brown hair, a receding hairline and a fuller face, and Philip's hair was light brown, his eyes were grey-blue and the shape of his head long and thin. We know this because both were dearly interested in their own appearance, and sat to a number of different artists. William, for instance, was portrayed in miniature by Isaac Oliver in 1616. In the present exhibition, another miniature by Oliver (no.87) dated 1611, seems not, as catalogued, to represent William, but rather to be an unusually sympathetic image of Philip." The coating used in the finely hatched, light brown background may be watercolor mixed with egg tempera. It shows evidence of shrinkage causing a splotching effect, which may also be the result of air bubbles. The miniature is in a gold frame, on the back of which are locks of hair decorated with gold thread and a pearl ornament. The small clump of hair to the left is a light brown, in contrast to the darker brown hair composing the other clusters. One possibility is that the light hair is Rosalie's and the dark hair is Charlotte's. Neither shade of hair matches that of the bracelet in no. 143.
