1 2011- 2012 NC MIA Scholarship Awards

2 Grover Sawyer Jr. Award $1000 Erica is the daughter of James Gurganus, City of Jacksonville Plans Examiner. She is beginning her college career at UNC-Chapel Hill, majoring in Biology and with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. Erica has had an outstanding High school career and was involved with Health Occupations Society of America, National Science Honor Society, and other organizations. She has volunteered at the USO, Relay for Life, and had an internship has an NC Senate Page. She has also completed an internship with a Jacksonville Dental Practice. Ms. Erica Gurganus

3 Lee Hauser Award $1000 Wesley is the son of Terry Clark, a Cleveland County Building Inspector. Wesley is a Senior at ASU, majoring in Physical Education & Health. He is a past NC MIA scholarship award recipient, and has continued his strong college performance. He has achieved Dean’s and Chancellor’s list, and is active in intramural sports and volunteering at various schools near Boone, NC. This summer he worked for the fourth year as the head lifeguard at the Ruby Hunt YMCA in Boiling Springs, NC Mr. Wesley Clark

4 NC MIA Scholarship $750 William is the son of Tom Smith, Mechanical and Plumbing Plans Examiner, Mecklenburg County. William has had a strong High School Career, and will be beginning his higher education this fall at The Citadel. He will be majoring in Physics. During his High School tenure, he has participated in a rugby club, was President of the German Club, and served as Senior Class Secretary. He has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, through his many activities and services to the community. Mr. William Smith

5 NC MIA Scholarship $750 James is the son of James Dale Pruitt, who is a Senior Code Enforcement Official with the Town of Wake Forest, NC. He is a rising Junior at ECU. He is studying Business Management and Finance. He has completed two years at Vance-Granville, and has earned the respect of his instructors and community. James has been very active and supportive of many ministries at Oxford United Methodist Church, in addition to his studies and work at a local grocer. Mr. James Pruitt

6 NC MIA Scholarship $750 Lindsey is the daughter Luther Nash III, who is employed by the Town of Chapel Hill, NC. She is a rising sophomore at Alamance Community College, with a goal of transferring an obtaining an engineering degree. She has achieved success in the classroom, earning Honor’s List in her first year of college, and also is a superb golfer, achieving many first place wins with Alamance Junior Golf Association. She completed her high school studies a year early, and has already completed her first year of college at seventeen. She has been active and supportive of various ministries at her church, and has completed four mission trips to assist people with health or age infirmities. Ms. Lindsey Nash

7 NC MIA Scholarship $750 Jessica is the daughter of Clarence Milligan, Code Enforcement Official with Scotland County. Jessica is a past recipient of an NCMIA scholarship, and she has continued her stellar college performance at Gardner-Webb University, where she is a rising Senior, majoring in Biology. This past year, she was an Honor Roll student, and was an NCSA All-American Scholar athlete, playing fast pitch softball and volleyball. She has also been a volunteer at Scotland Memorial Church and Relay for Life team member. Ms. Jessica Milligan

8 NC MIA Scholarship $750 Megan is the daughter of Paul Ezell, Codes Administrator with Cleveland County. She is a past recipient of an NC MIA scholarship, and has continued her successful college career, where she is a rising Senior at UNC-Charlotte, majoring in Special Education. Megan achieved Chancellor’s List, and has been teaching students with autism and other disabilities. She is planning on attending conferences to learn new and innovative ways to teach special education students. She has been active in Key Club, Student Council for Exceptional Children, a volunteer at North Shelby School, and Church Softball. Ms. Megan Ezell
