4.  Your student should have an blue literature book at home.  Students do NOT need to bring the books to class. 5.  Grades  Major Grades 50% – tests, projects, and papers. Testing days are odd-numbered dates.  Quiz Grades 30% - There are at least 6-7 quiz grades per 9 weeks.  Daily Grades 20% - homework, vocabulary assignments, daily class work  Late/Make-up Work  Late daily work is not accepted. This is an English Department standard.  Students may email assignments as proof of their timeliness, but are responsible for own printing.  Assignments are posted on my teacher webpage in two places: Google Calendar and listed.  An unexcused absence on a Major Grade due date will result in the assignment being counted late, which is 10 points off per day.  Make-up days for English are Tuesday after school and Friday morning.  Tutorials  All students are encouraged to come to tutorials after school for additional assistance in class if needed. Tutorials are held by appointment.

6.  Fall – Persuasive Terms, Literary Devices, Short Stories, STAAR short answer format, and STAAR persuasive essay format  Spring – Julius Caesar, Of Mice and Men, 1984, and a persuasive research paper

7.  Supplies  Each student is expected to have: Pens, pencils, notebook paper, and Vocabulary Book ($14.00)  Class Rules & Behavioral Expectations  Students are expected to behave so that learning can happen. The student is expected to:  follow all school and district policies as stated in the Student Code of Ethics. This includes dress code, cell phone, and I.D. policies.  come to class every day on time. Tardies will be recorded.  follow all teacher directions, and be prepared with needed materials and completed assignments.  maintain a respectful attitude towards the teacher and the other students, actively participate in class, and take responsibility for learning and success in the classroom.  Discipline Procedures  If a student has shown inability to conduct himself in an appropriate manner, or if his or her conduct disrupts either student learning or the teacher’s ability to teach, that student will be disciplined immediately.  1 st offense – verbal warning/possible email home  2 nd offense – parent/guardian contact  3 rd or repeat offense – referral to grade level Assistant Principal (Mr. Dixon)

8. RE-TESTING PURPOSE: The purpose and intent of the policy is to provide students with additional opportunities to show mastery of the content. The following will apply to English II Academic: 1. All students; including Advanced Placement (AP), Pre-AP, and GT students; in all content areas will have the opportunity to retest. 2. The retest/project will cover the same material as the original test/project; however, the retest/project resubmission may be in a different format with questions changed. 3. Students and teachers must communicate and plan for the retest within a reasonable time period after the teacher notifies the student of a failing grade. Notification will be either the date of the test being returned or the date that the grade is entered into Skyward, whichever is later. 4. The student may be required to attend tutorials, complete test corrections, or perform other tasks as directed by the teacher, prior to retesting. 5. Students caught cheating on a test may not request a subsequent retest. 6. If a student scores lower on the retest, the original test grade will stand. 7. The maximum grade received for retest will be a 70. Example: If a student fails a test and gets a 62 on the retest, their grade on the assignment/test will be a 62. If the student retests and makes an 82 on the retest, their final grade will be a 70 on the assignment/test. 8. All semester final exams are ineligible for a retest. ** Students who abuse the current re-testing policy will be subject to administrative review. This review will be initiated by the teacher and referred to the grade-level principal.

9.  Students are given 1 grade per week as an average score of their behavior.  100 – Student is quiet, works hard, and does not disrupt others.  75 – Student talks often, leaves without permission, and disrupts others.  50 – Student continues to exhibit disruptive behavior even after being redirected.  0 – Student is sent to the grade level office for disruption, abuses a hall pass, or is truant.  Overall, I expect students to be quiet and find a task to keep them busy. Quiet, busy children make me happy

11.  Students are expected to behave and come to class ready to learn everyday.  I know students can become frustrated and want to copy others, but I encourage and require individual work.  I know this transition is difficult, and I only want to make it easier for the student.  Translators:  I do not have translators in the classroom, so it is very helpful to me if the student has one.  I have 4 iPads that the whole class must share.  If the student is seen using his phone for purposes other than translating, I can take it away.
